The beer, designed once again by IRON MAIDEN vocalist and ale aficionado Bruce Dickinson along with Robinsons’ Head Brewer Martyn Weeks, takes its inspiration from a very early Robinsons recipe which was first brewed in the 1850’s; a time when porter style beer was becoming increasingly popular in Britain.
Bruce Dickinson explains: “I like tasting outside the box. Stouts and porters were virgin territory for me so I just went by feel. Martyn and I hope we have created a new take on a classic beer and one which I hope will tickle the taste buds of ale fans in a pleasantly unexpected way.”
At 6.8% in bottle or 5.8% ABV in cask, TROOPER Red ‘N’ Black is the strongest beer in the range to date.

Bottle courtesy of Dan. Pours very dark borwn with a maroon tint and a beige head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, jammie fruits, dark fruit, molasses and toffee. Quite heavy sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily/sticky texture, soft carbonation. Finish has a slightly fizzy end, sweet and sticky.

33 cl bottle. Pours hazy orange with a huge tan head. Aroma is toasted malty and caramelish. Toasted malty and light herbal. Dry and roasted malty. Lingering toasted malty. Slight herbal hoppy finish.

Pours dark brown with nice red undertone and small, non-lasting beige head. Biscuity malt nose, some vanilla presence and a bit rum soaked sponge cake. Later more chocolatey. Sweeter start, not too intense. Slight roasty feel in the body. A hint of alcohol warmth in the finish as well as mild grassy bitterness. Not bad at all.

500ml bottle. Foamy, patchy beige head on top of a burgundy-brown-black body. Brings me right back to the UK with its thick caramel malt tones. Full bodied, a little more ABV than a traditional example, but doesn’t have the depth to back it up. Drinkable enough, OK.
