This seasonal beer is a limited edition brewed for the short days and long nights of winter. The full body resulting from fermentation in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ and the luxurious malt character, which will appeal to a broad range of drinkers, is balanced against whole-dried Fuggle and Golding hops with nuances and complexities that should be contemplated before an open fire.

55cl bottle from AbeerVinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours an elegant red, transparent, with fine white foam. Aroma is malty, caramel. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is moderately bitter, with good malty sweetness behind. Final is average.

Bottle from House of Trembling Madness. Pours a clear amber with small off-white head, some retention, Standard. Aroma is a little tinny (aka pasteurised) but reasonable with malty caramel notes as well raisin and pear fruitiness. Taste is certainly more welcoming on a near winter night with caramel and toffee notes, raisins, dried fruits and spice, a little zesty bitterness. Very nice. Medium bodied, zingy carbonation. Far from perfect but nonetheless enjoyable.

Home from the carol service at the village church. An enjoyable evening with the greatest hits hymns, even if I am a complete atheist. Anyway, I am now well and truly in a Christmassy mood and this was the beer to drink. This is a classic rich ESB, with an emphasis on malt. Very pleasant.
