Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

341ml bottle as Dieu du Ciel Aphrodite, lot 108, bought at Vinmonopolet City Nord. Crocheted lacing from a bubbly, tan-coloured head. Jet black body. Inviting cocoa aroma. Blended taste profile of cocoa powder, earthy malts and a backdrop of coffee. Vanilla chocolate hints towards the ending, nicely roasted. Fine bodied. Nice. (Bodø 20.05.2017).

Draft. Quite black. Thick (nitro) head. Rich chocolate and a touch of toast...smells sweet. Sweet and chocolate...ok that rich hot chocolatey stuff, honestly this has some good taste but lacks complexity...the nitro...would like more character.

Nitro at Louisville Beer Store. Pours a pitch black with a creamy, beige head of foam. Huge cacao nib nose with some faint vanilla. Deep chocolate notes, toasty marshmallow and almond. Well-balanced with a lingering creamy, coffee-like, cacao nib finish. Awesome.

Bottle at home courtesy of Maakun. Black with thin tan head. Milk chocolate, coffee berry/bean, cocoa powder, vanilla, milk skin, hazlenut, roasted marshmallows. Big sweet and moderate bitter. About medium body, bit powdery dry, bit watery thin velvety feel, soft carbonation. Like the deep roastiness.

Bottle shared. Very dark brown with small beige head. Lots of vanilla, roasted malts, cocoa, light earthy, toast, soft creamy, roasted hazelnuts, brown sugar. Like chocolate milk with marshmallows in it, just less sweet. I’d say under medium sweet even with dry cocoa bitterness. Just medium bodied with a bit dry mineral feel. Pretty nice!

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black worth a creamy persistent foam, brownish in color and very fine. Aroma is cocoa, roasted. Body is mildly carbonated, with some tongue-tickling. Taste is somehow bitter, though not if the hoppy type. Must indeed be the cocoa giving this bitterness. Some final sweetness as well. Final is rather long and mildly bitter.

Bottle at home in London. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige ad. The nose holds vanilla, baking cocoa, burnt toast, some toasted caramel, faint oxidation (this bottle is more than a year old). Medium sweet flavour with a luxurious chocolate character, light ashy roast, bittersweet cocoa. Some coffee grounds, earth, woody dryness. Medium bodied, lightly oily, with fine to average carbonation. Nicely balanced finish with more ashy roast, bittersweet baking cocoa, vanilla pods, dashes of scorched earth. Good depth, solid body. Great stuff overall.
