XXXX refers to the alcohol level and the depth of flavour in this stout. Our kettle hops drum up a fabulous aroma, flaked barley delivering big time on texture and the darkly roasted grain building a flavour as solid as a rock. Not for the faint hearted. Can you handle it?

330 ml bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, coffee, molasses, light herbal, and roast/bready earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, light molasses, light herbal, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of sharp roasted/earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light molasses, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of roasted/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a crisp malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming presence after the finish. Overall this is an excellent dry stout style. All around great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Drought. Inky black with creamy chocolate colored head, milk aroma, coffee beans and milk taste, low carbonation, longish finish with a bit of bitterness on your palate. Very much like Caffreys

25 cl. draft @ Delrium Tap House. Black with an okay mocha head. Nose is sweet caramel with typical mocha, coffee & chocoalte but not very impressive nose. Taste is sweet coffee, middling, caramel, herbs, bit of toffee & coffee, sweet sugar, solid malt presence,... Med. to light for style body. Solid effort but not the best around. Now seeing that this is a "Dry Stout" I am far more possitive about this. I gave this 0,1 more for style.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark brown in colour with a small tan head. Rich chocolate aroma, very dry, with a very bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A good beer, but could do with a little more body to it.

330ml bottle 5.7% version from Beers of Europe - Pitch black body, frothy tan head. Nose is a rich coffee, roasted malt, liquorice and bitter chocolate. Also picking blackcurrants up too. The taste is a bit like those blackcurrant and liquorice sweets, sweet to start with and a lasting bitter finish. Palate lets this one down, a bit thin and watery. A bit more robust and this would be a cracker. Still very nice though.

Keg @ Porterhouse Central Dublin [140813]
Black, ruby edges, tan dense head, good lacing
Aroma - Soft dark malts, roasted malts, touch spicy
Taste - Dark bitter roast, dark chocolate, spicy hop, coffee grounds, good taste spoiled by the aggressive burnt finish
Palate - Soft carb, medium body. Finish - Bitter bitter roast, dry, loooong linger, too much burnt roast
Overall - The finish is way too burnt and bitter for me - rather disappointed with this - not a fan ...must try the bottle and see if its better

Bottle: Very dark amber coloured, ruby spots detectable,mid-sized loose tanned head, dried dark fruits, roasted malt, ashes and freshly ground coffee in the bitter nose; solid dry bitter flavour, barely medium bodied; heavily lingering bone-dry coffeeish and bitter finish. Wow, what a Stout…
