Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, many say, and if you are a beer geek there is no better way to start the day than with a powerful, complex morning stout.
This is the beer that started it all for Mikkeller. Oatmeal Stout brewed with coffee and seven different kind of malt (Pils, Oat, Smoked, Caramunich, Brown, Pale Chocolate, Chocolate), roasted barley, oat flakes, hops (Centennial, Cascade), American ale yeast and gourmet coffee. Aroma is a combination of malts, caramel, chocolate and coffee. The body is medium with light coffee and chocolate flavors with a creamy texture, average carbonation and a bitter edge on the finish. A beer that goes extremely well with breakfast.

Bottle shared at home. Black with light tan head. Sweet roasted chocmalts, charcoal, roasted nuts, old coffee. Light sweet and quite ashy bitter and light woody sour. Medium body, bit thin feel but quite a roasted aroma to make up for it. Quite nice, bitter dark choco and charcoal finish.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Black with good sized light brown head. Quite some roasted notes, coffee, light dust, chestnuts, dried berries, a hint of cream. Under medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium bodied with a bit watery finish. Nice coffee stout.

Brilliant beer. Completely black, with an almost oily texture. Aroma is incredibly intense and complex, with lots of aromas, especially coffee and some chocolate. Flavour is similar. Very intense coffee (espresso) flavour. Long tasty and creamy finish.

Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a quickly dissipating head. No lacing.
The aroma embraces a sharp acidic coffee bean over top of sweet cocoa bean. Slight vanilla bean but very dry.
The flavor leans dryly sweet with a sharp roast. Delicate bitter bite and once again, acidity level is there. Dry roasty coffee bean aftertaste with finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice dry smooth sessionable feel to it. Carbonation feels fine.
Overall, good imperial stout that I would have again, preferably before the coffee bean acidity slides in....hmmmm. This bottle was dated best before 07/09/20, double hmmmm....

330ml bottle. Pours pitch black. Aroma is all bitter dark chocolate and coffee with plenty of savoury oats and a hint of umami and smoke. Flavour starts all coffee, like what I imagine really good coffee tastes like. Bitter, with spiced dark fruits. There’s a creamy oat backbone that really grounds everything, leading to a big beer that never goes too over the top. It’s controlled and extremely tasty.

Shared 11.2 oz. bottle. Pours almost black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee notes, and oats. Warming finish with some bitterness and acidity. An excellent stout.

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, best before May 2019. Pitch black with a thin, fluffy, rather quickly diminishing, brown head. Sweetish, roasty-malty aroma with lots of coffee, burnt nuts, tobacco, some licorice and dark chocolate. Sweetish, roasty-malty taste of coffee, dark chocolate, some licorice, tobacco and burnt nuts, followed by a short, roasty-bitter finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice, but the aroma promised a bit more, body is a bit thin as well. Maybe too old already.

Bottle. A- Coffee, roasty, subtle booze. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Coffee, roasty, dry cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- A straight forward, no bs, coffee stout. Not really complex or rich but does what it’s meant to do. Solid, but I’d have liked it to be a bit more robust.
