Introducing Mysterious Haze, a new year-round offering from deep within the hop labs here at Smuttynose Brewing Co. This medium-bodied, double dry-hopped New England IPA is a master class in showcasing the tropical characteristics of Citra hops, featuring initial notes of grapefruit, guava and mango that melt beautifully into a complex after taste of citrus and delicate herbs.

Just how much will you love it? That’s a mystery only your first sip can unravel.

Reviewed from notes.
Can to tulip.
Appearance: dark orange to copper color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely and left just a little bit of lace
Aroma: floral & tangerine-like hops; clean bready malts
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a fine bittersweet quality; lingering finish of the tangerine notes
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, some smoothness, semi-low carb - hmmm, could be lowered just a wee bit more; low hop bitterness but that could be lowered just a little bit more too
Overall: it's on it's way to being really good, I believe I could come back to this.

16 ounce can from Whole Foods Charlottesville, 12/23/19. Hazy orange large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of toasted malt and floral hops. There, but not very interesting. Taste is pale malt, melon, pine. Some toast. Medium bodied. Simple. Not very mysterious. Well executed. Decent.

Very hazy golden, peach and light orange coloured body with a nice and soft two centimetre tall, just off-white head. Aroma of flowers, astringent grain, cleanser and a heavy dose of high alpha acid hops without any fruits or juicy qualities, but that is quite refreshing with this one. Medium-bodied; Slightly astringent and potent, hop flavours dominate with a lot of bitterness and dry grainy malt notes with some slightly subdued specialty grains on the edges and a dash of flowers and subtle spices towards the end that show more of a saison than a 'true' New England IPA. Aftertaste is deep, robust, potent and quite bitter in terms of the hops thrown in the mix - this tastes much more of a West Coast IPA than New England, aide from the unfiltered [hazy] qualities. Overall, a very nice, if slightly misnomer-ed beer, that shows a lot of bitterness, flavours, robust qualities and alpha acid hops, much more so than most 'true' New England IPAs, but in a good way for the 'typical' hop lover, like me. I sampled this sixteen ounce ,pint-sized can, purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 22-October-2019 for US$3,49 sampled at home in Washington on 08-November-2019.

$4.99 pint can, Total Wine, Gainesville. For a beer called Mysterious Haze, you would think it'd be hazy. It's not. Clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is resin, pine, mango, light citrus (orange?). Flavor is light orange, somewhat candied and sugary, caramel, pine. This is no NEIPA.

Taster pour at the brewery. Appearance is clear, lightly hazy, pale yellow with exceptional sparkle, thin ring of off-white head. Aroma is nice citrus, tropical fruit, pineapple. Taste is initial dank bitter blast and crackery malt, then morphs into bittersweet grapefruit and citrus dominant over lighter tropical fruit. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, soft-to-average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, taste is more bitter than you'd expect from the aroma and is less tropical fruity, so could have been a little bit higher in my book but still enjoyable.

Pours hazy deep gold into a tulip. Bright white head with medium retention leaving spider lacing. Sour tropical fruit aromas. Soft with sour caramel and dirty socks upfront turning to overripe fruit skin in the lasting finish.
