This ‘Old Fisherman’s Ale’, named after the fishing trawlers on which men would risk life and limb to feed their families, sits somewhere in between a Belgian strong dark ale and a stout. It pours a luscious dark brown with a creamy tan head. Each sip hits you with complex flavors of toasty bitterness and deep caramel sweetness. With all its dark and strong complexity, this beer lends itself perfectly to all types of barrel-aging, which is exactly what we've done. We've aged it on various different barrels, including bourbon and calvados. Don't miss out and try it soon! As of 2016 the abv is 12%.

Bottle from Hop Burns and Black, enjoyed watching Munster v Stormers. Deep ruddy brown with a thin tan head that leaves an oily film. Nose of rum & raisin, prunes, molasses. Taste is big dried fruit sweetness, medium bitterness, brandy warmth. Full body, quite flat and creamy, lingering boozy fruit cake finish. Very nice.

Medium brown. No head. Aroma has some alcohol and a bit of toffee on the nose. It feels old, on the body, sort of lacking in carbonation to bring some of the malt sugars across. And alcohol is getting in the way of esters. Certainly, this pour doesn't come across nearly as complex as when the beer first came out, the change in my own tastes notwithstanding. There is some good character, but it's definitely past its prime, oxidation getting involved and again just that lack of carbonation.

Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 09/02/2023+5yrs). Chestnut brown with small light beige head. Aroma of dried dark fruits with a very feint phenolic bandaid note. Taste swaps the intensity - a bit more plastic phenol with mild dark dried fruit. Luckily the plastic bandaid is minimal, mostly hidden. Average.

Draught. Dark brown to black. Smallish head. Dark fruits, figs and half malts and candy sugars. Good but not quite as amazing as I’d hoped
