Can from Uiltje Shop, Haarlem. Clear pale golden, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of bacon, cooked ham, cooked apple, pear, smoked wheat, tobacco. Taste has sweetish apple & pear, wheaty & white-bready malt body with smoky bacon throughout, some herbal tobacco. Grassy hoppy finish, smoky & burnt, soft touches of fruit. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Well-made, nice to see this take on the style by Uiltje.

3/VII/21 - 33cl can from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte), shared @ home, BB: 25/III/22, canned: 25/III/21 (2021-568)

Clear bright blond yellow beer, creamy bit irregular white head, unstable, falls down quickly, bit adhesive. Aroma: nice and smoky, malty, grains, some cow fodder. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: smoky start, bit malty, sourish touch, pretty bitter, bit sweet, more malty flavour profile which is nice in this type of beer. Aftertaste: little fruity, bitter, soft acidity, hoppy, malty, grains, good smoky finish, pretty decent one!

Clear blond colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour are bacony. Smoky, salty, dry bacon. Bacon frazzles, fried up pieces of bayonne ham. Behind the bacon there's a simple malty body. A decent effort.

On tap at uiltje bar. Golden beer, small head. Aroma is smoke, light malt. Taste is the same, sweet, light bitter, light smoke, hint of yellow fruit and citrus. Not bad!

Can. Quite some smoke, sweet malts, bacon, bread crust. Medium sweet, under medium bitter. Decent smoked beer but not my favorite style.

Helder geel bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is bitterzoet met een duidelijke rooksmaak die ik zeker niet onaardig vind. Eens wat anders van deze brouwerij.

“Smoked Pilsener” by one of Holland’s most proliferous craft breweries – and a welcome change from all those IPAs they keep churning out, though is apparently one of their classics, having been in existence under some or other label since their early years (2014 to be precise). Thanks to Craftmember for sharing the can. Medium thick, moussy, snow white, opening head on a deep ‘old gold’ beer, clear with a slight greenish tinge. Aroma of white bread dough, soggy cereals, indeed smokiness of smoked herring and ‘rookkaas’ (smoked cheese) but not overpowering, moist cigarette shag, grass, raw cauliflower, vague whiff of green apple, something very faintly rubbery and a touch of honey when warming up. Cleanly and restrainedly sweetish onset with an apple-ish streak to it, softish carb, smooth and supple, even slightly glueish mouthfeel; clean and straightforward cereally and white-bready pale maltiness, until indeed the Rauchmalz appears, adding a smoked mackerel- and cigarette shag-like effect – even smoked cheese – but again, complementing the basic Pilsener profile rather than taking it over completely. It is followed by a grassy, quite outspoken, well-positioned hop bitterness that matches well with the smoky accent. Interesting one, considering Uiltje’s current preoccupation with IPAs: could be interpreted as a very ‘soft’ and restrained interpretation of Bamberger Rauchbier, softer and less smoky than e.g. Spezial which in itself is already softer than the legendary Aecht Schlenkerla; in fact, the smokiness in this lager is soft enough to justify its “Pilsener” ambitions, and have it classified somewhere in between Pilsener and Rauchbier (at least that is how it comes across now: judging from early ratings below, older batches were apparently considerably smokier). In any case: I love Rauchbier and I would love to see Uiltje go all the way with the Bamberger Rauchmalz, but as a compromise between Rauchbier and Pilsener, this worked remarkably well for me as an easygoing, ‘daily’ quencher.

Bottle. Blonde. Malty, bready smoky flavor with fat sausage. Full bodied. Fat smoky flavor with some fruity notes. Smoked sausage. Quite likeable.
