This used to rate a 3.7. It is not what it was. Sampled from a bottle this beer poured a black color with a small foamy tan head that left no lacing. The aroma was toasty, Woody and had a floral hop note. The flavor was bitter, roasty and woody with a sharp floral hop presence and moderate astringency. Long finish. Medium body.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into an English Pint. Pours black with a half finger of tan head. Aroma of sweet chocolate, caramel and a tiny hint of coffee. Taste is light bitter. Dark chocolate, coffee and caramel. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, great beer for springtime when it’s getting warmer outside but still kinda cold. I could drink this outside.

Bought this at Whole Foods in the DC area. Paid $2.25 for a single bottle. Poured at 45 Degrees F into a Dogfish Head Signature glass A - Poured just like a stout should but with a slight tan and translucent view through the pour. The head was nearly 2 fingers on my vigorous pour producing a very milky / creamy head that is brown matching the beer itself. Overall, a gorgeous looking stout. S - Cream, espresso beans, chocolate. There are some toasted nuts in this with some big resin scents. There’s another dominent smell that I can’t quite figure out. It’s a malty smell but not a pleasant one. T - More nuts and resin on the tongue. There’s a lot of espresso and creamy tones but a very putrid aftertaste. It’s bitter, not very creamy, not very sweet and just like drinking a malty coffee. Malted coffee with resin and a displeasing astringency. I bought this about 2 weeks ago and can’t locate a date on the bottle but it’s like this brand new beer has fallen off. M - Lots of creamy bubbles floating around O - I want to love this beer! Everything was great until I tasted it. The first taste is great but after that, it’s all down hill. I hope others have better experiences with this one.

Sample at the 4th Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/21/2012: Pours a dark reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts and coffee. Medium body with a sweet malt character and notes of roasted nuts, hops and mild coffee. The finish is creamy with a sweet malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Pours black into a snifter. Tan head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet milk chocolate aromas. Thin with toffee, sweet milk chocolate, and anise upfront turning to a dry, dark, smoky resin finish..

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a very dark brown with a large fizzy tan head. Average head retention. Aroma of chocolate, cocoa, nuts, coffee, faint hop finish. The taste is sweet malts, cocoa, nuts, oats, lactose, coffee and a bitter hop finish. Medium-full bodied. Nice beer.
