Josephsbrau Plznr (pilsner) is a celebration of noble hops from central Europe. This style of beer was developed by German brewmaster Joseph Groll in 1849 in the town of Plzen (Pilsen), Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) and was the first beer to be brewed golden and clear. This beer’s pin-point fine bitterness is perfectly accentuated by its crisp body.

Bottle. Pale yellow with small white foamy head, doughy aroma, high carbonation, slightly sweet taste, abrupt finish. Pretty generic beer.

Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - picked up at Trader Joe’s in Manhattan, most likely. Pours crystal clear, yellow-gold, quite effervescent with a frothy white head. The aroma has some tangy cereal and biscuity pale malts. Light sweet flavor, somewhat metallic, with bitter and dirty hay, crispy cereal. Light bodied with average to lively carbonation. Fair bitter hay to finish, mild metallic tang, dry cereal, hints of biscuits. All in all a pretty fine pils.

Pours light gold into a shaker. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Caramel and toast aromas. Crisp with sweet caramel, hay and toast upfront turning to bitter earth in the lasting finish.

i have to go against the grain on this one. This is a solid Czech style pilsner. Golden color and a white head that laces the glass nicely. Aroma has mild hops. Flavor is dry with more hops and malt, and I have no difficulty picking up the Saaz character. Good palate. At $6/six pack, this is a fine beer. it comes much closer to what Bohemian pilsner should be than many domestic examples, and who wouldn’t like the price.

12 oz bottle purchased at the Trader Joe’s in Kansas City, Missouri. Best Consumed Before 06/09/12 stamped on the label. The pour is a clear golden with a one inch white head that falls with minimal lacing. The aroma is malt, straw and a bit of bright hop spice. A touch of dirt earthiness in there as well. The taste is spiced hop up front, some bright bitterness, the straw, then some lightly sweet malt. The floral shows, along with a bit of chemical dirt. The palate is medium to light bodied, lower carbonation, lingering dry bitter finish. Decent beer, decent value - though for about the same price I think I would buy Boulevard Pilsener.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joe’s Glen Allen, VA. Pours a clear vibrant golden color with a thin off-white head. Decent head retention. Grassy aroma with a faint caramel malt finish. The taste is grassy hops, some mint, toasted malts and a bit of corniness. Thin-medium bodied. Decent.
