Shirley Mae (1936 - 2015) was our cousin, daughter of Everett, and a beloved supporter of her family and Hill Farmstead. In her honor, this American session version of our Everett porter is crafted from American malted barley, English and German roasted malts, American hops, our ale yeast, and water from our well. Chocolate, coffee, and light malty sweetness, this ale embodies her ebullient and generous spirit—a fitting tribute.

Tap @ Warpigs, tap take over. Black with a lovely, dense, creamy beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and light bitter finish. 120516

On tap at Warpigs. Black with a thick nitro head. Intense chocolate and mocha aroma almost a little candy-like. Dry and very roasted flavour with chocolate and coffee. A bit thin and watery in the finish. Like a Guinness with actual flavour.

From tap. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma is toasted dark malty. Breadish, roasted and dark malty. Bitter and dry malty finish.

Mekelburg’s, Brooklyn tap: pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, pretzel, light chocolate, and hoppiness. Taste is lightly bitter. Low sweetness. Great balance. Light body. But this is not watery in any way. I cannot say that this is simple, but it is a little beer. Nice.

Perfect pour just as Everett is. Huge, tan head is well-retained atop an ebony body of indeterminable clarity.
Lots of discussion on this vs. Everett. In the end, sure it comes down to preference, with, obviously, the consensus among beergeeks that bigger is better, thus giving Everett the nod. I’m not so sure, though. This is so unbelievably drinkable, even after a long day of drinking, like I had today. Lots of chalkiness, but it works really nicely as a balance to the bitter roast. Deliciously malty texture, yet highly attenuated, as always from Shaun. Dark chocolate, light coffee, some nuttiness and very light caramel with warming. Tight carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. Amazing. If you can’t taste the difference between this and just another average porter, you should try it again and pay more attention to it.

Tap. Pours rich creamy black- nitro pour, large creamy tan head. Aroma of roasty malt, cocoa, light ashtray. Flavor is light sweet, light bitter, very flavorful. Medium body, creamy. Nice.

Draft, Nitro @ Hill. Black, brown edges. Looks great. The nitro pour is just absurdly pretty. 3 finger dense chocolate colored head, pours nice. The mouthfeel is exquisite. I’d say the nitro really does make this thin and mini Everett taste really good. Will have to get a growler to confirm. Aroma is very light, cocoa, chocolate, espresso, taste, it has everything you expect from everett just the roast is slightly less intense than Everett. This is pretty good. I’d still default to Everett.

Growler thanks to Charles. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is roast, chocolate, cracker. Medium mouth, rich malt, roast, chocolate, light dry finish.

Growler shared thanks to kermis. Very dark brown with light brown head. Lots of nice roasted grains, nuts, cocoa beans and even some toasted wood. There’s some nice herbs too, but more old and dusty ones than fresh and aromatic. Light mineral and chalky. Very light sweetness with light roasted and mineral bitterness. Over light bodied with even a very slight creamy feel and nice soft carbonation. Very good for the ABV.
