Barrel Aged Weizenbock brewed in collaboration with the Pacific Gravity Homebrew Club.Flavors of sweet vanilla and bourbon mingle with banana and clove in this barrel-aged German-style weizenbock. Brewed with wheat, pilsner, Munich, and highly-kilned melanoidin malts for a solid base, PGW has just a touch of hop balance, letting the banana and clove character of our traditional Bavarian wheat beer yeast strain take center stage. Eleven months spent resting in retired charred American oak bourbon barrels adds a layer of complexity reminiscent of Bananas Foster.

Bomber 2016. Barrel, wheat, vanilla, whiskey in the nose. Lovely brownish orange, lace. Big estery flavor, caramel, banana, bourbon. Really fun and unique.

Draught, ES. Dull amber, no head, light barrel, banana, touch wheaty, light sugars. Ends up just ok - I liked my first sip quite a bit but it ended up not being all that complex, relative to what I thought it could be.

Draft - Caramel, raisin and vanilla. Clearish gold with a small white head. Fruity date, raisin and a nice malt forward finish with a touch of barrel. Nice.

Vintage 2016 on draught at Ginger Man Boston, 2/6/18.
Strange transluscent cherry-amber appearance with no head. Doesn't look particularly appealing, let alone much like any weizenbock I've seen. But to be honest, in today's chicken soup-looking IPA world, it's hard to care too much about appearance.
Big cherry-vanilla-wood nose is nice. Rich caramel mixing with oak and melanoidin-like fruit notes through the middle seems quite on par for style. Seems to be well-balanced, though there is a lot of caramel-like "sweetness". Not boozy.
In the mouth it's sweet caramel-raisin-vanilla. Light barrel tannin and spice almost overpowers the specialty malt-heavy texture. Oak, vanilla, cherry and other red fruits show a rather hybrid weizenbock/American strong ale flavor through the middle. Some coconut/pina colada on the end from the barrel. Low, loose carbonation. Actually needs much more depth of malt and tighter carbonation. As is, it comes off a bit thin and overly tannic. Great flavors, but texture is way off.

22oz bomber pours with a near clear deep copper body that supports a near white head. The aroma offers up brown sugar, prunes, molasses and malt nuanced black berry. The taste delivers smooth brown sugar, smooth prunes, some thin molasses and honey drizzled apple. Pretty nice Weizzen

On tap at The Hay Merchant. Pours a hazy copper with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is vanilla, raisin, banana, oak, bourbon. Medium body, nice sweetness, vanilla, banana, licorice, nice boozy finish, very good.

Tap at Cap Tap. Pours amber with a near-white head. Aroma of light treacle, with a mild roasty/near smoky aspect. Making me think a bit of peat. Med body or better. It’s slickly sweet. There’s a wheaty/treacly main stream. Imagine a wheaty barley wine (contradiction?). The malt/wheat is not overly done, but it is the main deal. Smooth. Not bitter, but something is moderating the grain. Really good ale.

On tap at Barrelworks. It pours dark brown with a khaki head. The aroma has a with bourbon alcohol note up front with baked bread, spices and plum. The flavor is nutty with a little bourbon, alcohol, plums and bread. Light spice. Low carbonation. Pretty boozy for a 7% beer.

Bottle shared. Semi-hazy amber pour with a tan head. Bourbon, light caramelized bananas, toffee, dried fruit. Smooth texture, very well balanced, great bourbon barrels from Firestone Walker, as usual. --- Beer merged from original tick of Firestone Walker Pacific Gravity Weizenbock on 28 May 2017 at 12:18 - Score: 8
