A Mikkeller interpretation of the classic Trappist ale, Orval. Brett funk in a light fruity pale, that will taste great fresh, but age beautifully for years!

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Delhaize. I always expected Mikkeller to become a global brand but it is still a real schock to being able to buy a Mikkeller beer in a supermarket in Belgium. Drank side-by-side with Orval. Orval bottled on 10/03/2015. I think that there might be only 7 days difference between both bottles. Årh Hvad?! is BBF 04/03/2025. Small touch hazy amber compared to Orval but not much. Head is way bigger, disappearing rather quickly, off-white, colour is touch more milky. Brett is way heavier in the Årh Hvad?!, very upfront in the smell, caramel malts, orange peel, fruity in the back, flowers & lots of candy sugar in a good way but brett dominates. Taste is bitter floral, mineral, some bitter plastic, floral, plastic orange peel, plenty of brett, grass, dried apricot, lots of spices,… Light touch too plastic. Body is much drier, bit thinned out, less chewy malts but might be the age since I am drinking a very fresh Orval. I do think that both beers should be almost the same age. There is a plastic bitterness in the back. It really has all of the elements of Orval, it isn’t as fine tunned, it lacks complexity a bit, it is too much brett forward, touch too little sweetness, malt etc. It is a very admirable attempt. The spoof of the Trappist logo on the bottle is a nice touch. I def. enjoyed, it would have probably shined a bit more if I tried this one on its own & not next to Orval. I am a huge fan of Orval. I would love to try the BA versions of this beer. I blended a bit of both beers but the total was less than the sum of parts in my opinion. Still this is surprisingly close but no cigar.

330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen. Decent artwork on the glass from a rocky, pearl white head. Clear amber coloured body. Semi-tart smell of grass and dark spices. Fine blended taste of pears, caramel and citrus on a backbone of mild dark spices. Drying finish. Rounded texture. Successful interpretation of its Belgian brother (Tromsø 18.04.2015).

Big beige head. Hazy brown body with carbonation. Fruity wooden barnyard aroma with horse sweat notes. Dryish wooden barnyard taste with lemongrass notes. Mid-bodied. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel. Dry wooden barnyard aftertaste with resiny spicy freshly cut wood notes. Very nice. Drinkable, unusual, and full of character. (0.33l bottle, from Vinbudin Kringlan, Reykjavik.)

Bottle at home. Pours a hazy, dark orange color with a huge, light beige head. Fruity and sour aroma of vinegar, citrus, mango, rowan berries, barnyard, apricot and herbs. The flavor is more malty with the addition of bread, pepper, grass and berries. Has a slick and soft mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A nice, bitter and spicy Belgian ale.

330 ml bottle. Unclear orange body with a big, foamy, lacing off-white head. Very nice aroma with fruit, mild malt and quite distinct funky Brett. Fine, refreshing fruity, funky, sweet malt flavor. Nice body and long lasting aftertaste. A very nice Orval clone fine balance and a perhaps a bit more hops in the flavor than the original.
