As the first new beer to be brewed in Windsor for nearly 80 years GUARDSMAN is how we think every Best Bitter should taste. Guardsman is a lovely copper-coloured session strength ale with a tangy taste and a really fresh hop finish. It is brewed with premium Maris Otter pale malt and a blend of Pilgrim, Styrian Golding and Fuggles hops.

Bottle from Co-op, Chobham. Aroma is fruity, berries. A vinous edge. Opaque brown. Thin frothy white head. The flava replicates the aroma... berries. Even vma vinous element. Light. Thin. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Much more interesting than I was expecting.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours “bitter brown” with a medium sized off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has malts and cream. Malts again to the fore in the mouth, along with autumn fruits and hints of nuts and ginger. A little lemongrass and citrus as well. This is OK, but somewhat bland.

[50cl bottle from the Windsor Farm Shop] A bright golden amber pour with a fast fading white head; sweet barley aroma; fruity caramel taste; then a light bitterness with a touch of spice and a hedgerow finish.
Earlier Rating: 9/11/2010 Total Score: 3.2
Cask at the Two Brewers, Park Street, Windsor. Amber gold with a dense cream head; malty aroma; malty taste with orange fruit and crisp apples; and a dry lightly bitter finish. Could do with more assertive hops.

Bottle from Bestofbritishbeers.com. Copper coloured pour with a white head. Citrus, orange marmalade and light red fruit aromas. Taste is spookily similar to the aroma. Light bitterness in the finish. Quite tasty.
