This was the first beer in our Ancient Ales series.

This sweet yet dry beer is made with ingredients found in 2,700-year-old drinking vessels from the tomb of King Midas. Somewhere between beer, wine and mead, Midas will please the chardonnay and beer drinker alike.

For years, Dogfish Head has worked with biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern to bring Ancient Ales to life. For more on Midas Touch and the experience of Penn Museum excavators as they uncovered the tomb of the legendary King Midas, read this essay from Dr. Pat.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Clear, medium golden body with a small cap of foamy head. Grainy aroma, malty, reminiscent of some of the emmer or spelt beets in Germany. Taste starts out malty before turning over to some savory, herbal flavors, woody, juniper. I guess the ancient Sumerians had it pretty good...

Sample after Patrick McGovern talk in Easttown. Clear dark gold colored, medium body. Malt and honey aroma. Saffron bittered taste and acrid finish. No accounting for 700 B.C. tastes, but a real triumph of craft beer making.

Pours golden amber with a thick white head. Average levels of carbonation. Aroma has grape and melon notes. Taste is extremely sweet, honey notes and light grape notes throughout. Palate contains sweet malt notes, wine-like elements and honey notes on the back of the tongue. Wild drinking experience.

355ml bottle, shared at the Beer Jerk Bunker bottle share, thanks me. Pours orange gold. Honey, booze, slightly solventy, floral, saffron, white grape, slight sour grape thing. Full body. Interesting, don't think I'll ever buy another.

355ml bottle. Minimally milky, orangey golden to amber colour with small to average, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Sweet-ish, herbal, spicy and floral aroma, notes of honey, petals, a touch of marzipan, speculoos, white grapes. Taste is initially sweet-ish, biscuity malty and floral-fruity, notes of speculoos, marzipan, sugar powder, honey, herbal and spicy overtones, later slightly dry, vinous, almost oaky, hints of white grapes. Rich and complex, quite unusual, slightly too sweet overall.
