Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series)
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

Bottle. Black with a light tan head that settles to 1/2 a cm. Gentle aroma of mocha, light dough, spices. Slightly earthy. 7+ Full bodied, quite spritzy. Rather more assertive upon a taste with firm, almost acrid roast and tight spices. Some dried fruit and a more insistent earthy note than I'm keen on. Fine finish is roasty with plain chocolate, spices and a fair whack of bitterness. Pretty good, but not all that harmonious.

Bottle from QClub at home. Dark dark brown pour with fine foamy cappuccino colored head. Aroma is plum, roasted coffee, sawdust-y malt, in a good way, and alcohol. Taste is big deep roasted coffee bitterness with dark fruit and caramel sweetness. American imperial stout with some slight Belgian accents. Boozy. Slightly slick palate. Lasting coffee bitterness with alcohol warmth. Would probably get again for HK$52.

Aroma seems typical of a stout. I can definitely tell the difference between this and a regular stout, the increased ABV makes a difference in the taste. Well-crafted, this beer does a good job of incorporating certain elements into the palate.

355ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a large, creamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and licorice. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, plums, figs, dates, anise, coffee and smoke with a warming vinous note in a dry, mildly bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.

12 oz bottle. Pour a very dark brown with moderate head. Aromas nutty chocolate icing, roasted malts and a little dark fruit. Flavors follow same with licorice, plum skin and burnt coffee. Interesting fruity/herbal notes that make it distinctive

Located this 12 oz bottle in the Ft. Worth area while attending a wedding some months ago and held until now. Boulevard Brewing has developed into one of favorite brewers and I expect no less from their imperial stout. Dispensed into my New Belgium .47 liter tulip glass it shows the expected black body along with a healthy, finely-bubbled tan foam. Taking a smell I get cherry, raisin and milk chocolate. A drink gives tobacco, a stiff maltiness, black cherry, mahogany. Quite nice and decent. Just that there are better.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle (22 Nov 2018). Black with tan head. Chocolate, roast malt, liquorice, light leather, mild alcohol burn. Good, though a little bit harsh finish, but quite memorable never-the-less.
