Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year.

Another bit of XS craftsmanship from Rogue. Complex and well blended, this XS features cocoa, molasses, roasted malt, some licorice and coffee. The rolled oats help extend the taste and thicken up the body. The 88 IBUs are competing with a lot of taste and alcohol, but they make their presence felt as the taste continues. An expensive rarity north of the border, but nice when you have something to celebrate!

750ml in one of those fancy schmancy Ceramic Fliptops. BIG nose of coffee, and chocolate. Flavour is very much the same, but the alcohol is really quite present. I’ve had higher Impy stouts and the alcohol is better hidden than this. Dont get me wrong, its a good impy, but its quite thin, and the alcohol is really in your face.

2014 version drank in 2022. Has aged really well, still has a massive rusty beige head. Big, oily, thick, rich, viscous. Has the hop bitterness that has sort of been abandoned in the style. Roasty, oily finish, mild alcohol warmth. Really nice beer!

This one pours from 750ml ceramic bottle(no date on bottle) an almost pitch black as I can see some slight reddish hues. The tannish head of foam is quite small and there's very little lacing.
The smell has a lot going on. I get a lot of chocolate, toffee, sweet caramel, coffee, and a pretty strong nose of the more than ample alcohol.
The taste is huge. Lots of chocolate and coffee with big notes of caramel hit my taste buds on my first sip. As I take further sips, I'm getting some dark fruit, plum and maybe some semi sweet cherry, but the complexity is really very tasty. The finish on it is a mix of bitterness from the coffee and a slight tartness from the dark fruit. Alcohol wise, I'm not getting a burn from it that I imagined I would judging from the smell but once it goes down, there *is* a slight warming in the stomach for me and man, is this one a thick rich brew when it comes to the body! But it's nice. Yep, this is very nice. I think I'll get another couple of bottles(here in Casper, US$11.99 each) and do a bit of aging to see how things go.
Well, I've finished the 1/2 a glass I had in my New Belgium Goblet and I'm going to put this baby away until tomorrow. "Resealing" the bottle was a bit of a chore but I'm happy that it was as it should keep the beer fine carbonation wise...heck, it's lightly carbonated to begin with, eh? ;^)
Bottom line: It's been a few years since I last had this Imperial Stout...I'm glad it showed up in town again as I think it is one fine sipping example of the style. Highly recommended!
PS: I see a few people reviewed the 750s and mentioned seeing a vintage year. It's not on mine.

From old tasting notes. Brown/black color. Creamy tan head. Soft lactic roasted malt nose. Wow! Intense bittersweet roasted malt flavor. Notes of coffee, chocolate, licorice, smokiness and treacle. Very big and chewy. Lots of hop bitterness in finish to balance the intense malt flavor.

2014 edition- 10% abv. Appearance is jet black, with a tan, foamy clingy head. Aroma- loads of chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, leather, burnt toast, massive roasty malt, espresso coffee, dark fruit and liquorice hints. Bit of treacle toffee in there as well. Taste- bitter coffee, chocolate fudge cake, roasty toasty malt, coconut and vanilla undertones, molasses, thick chocolate milkshake, dark cooking chocolate. Mouthfeel is full and thick, almost chewy. The finish is almost sweet. Superb stout.
