This deep amber hued ale takes it's inspiration from Germany while still nodding to the Belgian farmhouse tradition. The base is comprised of German two-row wheat, Cara-Munich, and roasted barley. Generously hopped with a blend of Perle, Spalt, and Hallertau Mittelfrüh, and fermented with a rustic Belgian farmhouse ale yeast. These elements together provide a melange of earth and fruit aromas backed with hints of caramel and a dry clean finish.

Aroma seems well balanced between malt and hop character with some complimentary hop notes. Moderate caramel and toasted bread notes with faint darker malt characteristics. Some pear and red apple esters. Light, spicy, floral hop character towards the end. Pours a brown color with some amber and copper hues. Moderately thick, large, tan head with average retention. Medium high lacing and faint legs. Some foaming out the top when I popped the bottle cap. Flavor has a moderate sweetness to it with quite a bit of toasted bread and caramel melanoidins. Some light toffee and darker malt notes as well. Faint pear and red apple esters along with some raisin and plum. Medium bitterness in finish with faint earthy hop character. Light mineral character to the water. Touch of acidity. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low but present astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer but its not my favorite saison. I’m not quite sure what I find to be off about it, perhaps too many darker melanoidins and some astringency, but something isn’t quite right to me. It definitely has a German character to it and perhaps that combination with the Belgian yeast is what I find odd; when I think of malty German beers I think of clean beers.

Bottle and pours deep dark mahogany. Nose of light spice and toasted malt. Tastes of roasted malt, caramel, chestnuts, wood, minerally, light fruit, pepper, and ginger. Lively and smooth.

Bottled, large sample. Initially clear copper to dark redbrown color, big frothy off-white head. Aroma is quite spicy, autumn leaves, caramel, hint of roast, hint of chocolat, slight fruity note. Taste is slight sweet, hint of bitterness, bit dry. Quite spicy without having too much spices in it. Dont get a lot of farmhouse characteristics. Feels like a very decent belgian double kind of beer. Great balance. For an american try on belgian styles, Stillwater is definitely one of the better breweries to do it.

750ml bottle from drfabulous
Appearance: Pours hazy dark amber with a big long lasting beige head and good lacing
Aroma: Toasted malts, toffee, dark fruit and some alcohols
Taste: Malts, wheat, earthy and dark fruit
A nice sipper, grows on you. I didn’t like it at first but it got better as it warmed up.

Smak och doft choklad, malt, kakao, choklad, kaffe, vanilj. Smakar som en frisk och syrlig porter/stout, om detta är en svart IPA eller en saison råder det en viss förvirring om. FIn beska.

Location: 750 ml bottle from State Line, 11/12/12
Aroma: The nose is Belgian yeast, spice, some fruitiness, and a little bit of bready malts
Appearance: It pours a rather dark orange-reddish-brown color with a thick, lasting foam of beige head
Flavor: It has a nice malty sweetness, with yeasty flavors, spice, and a later balancing hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-full, with a tingly feel that's also pretty smooth, and a lengthy duration
Overall Impression: This is a really solid Belgian-style beer, with a pretty nice complexity to the flavor. Even though the flavor is complex, all the components work well together, and it doesn't really feel muddled at all. I'd recommend this one for sure, it is really solid stuff.

From a 750ml bottle on 4/11/2012 (shared by Butz - thanks). Pours a very cloudy dark amber with lots of yeast floaties. Has quite a strong, quite pungent fruity, yeasty aroma. The flavour is primarily of dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, spices and Belgian yeast. The carbonation is high and the bitterness medium. A good Belgian style ale.
