This beer is the result of a lively discussion between the Hofstetten Brewery and Matthias Neidhart from B. United International on beers and beer styles.
In 1810, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony celebrated their marriage in Munich.
Back then and today, beer has played a pivotal role in Munich’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, which takes place each September to commemorate the event.
We are all familiar with the images of golden beer in big liter glasses that have come to be associated with Oktoberfest, but how did the beer in 1810 really taste?
Due to the Munich’s extremely hard water, we are confident that the only beer being brewed at that time in the area was dark. Filtering would not have been common practice, and the beer would have been stronger in alcohol and well-hopped to ensure an adequate shelf life.
We were therefore sure to include all these elements in our Original Hochzeitsbier (Wedding Beer) from 1810 as well.
A malt bill of 100% Munich malt provides the darker color but also a certain amount of residual sugar, giving this beer a nice smooth body. Warm fruity notes from the hops then balance out this truly historical beer.

Draught from RNH. Pours a cloudy reddish brown. Small head Aroma of elephant dung - and I don’t mean that in a bad way, its just true. That’s what zwickels smell like. Earthy floral taste with some hops.

Bottle. The best Oktoberfest beer I’ve ever had. Cloudy, amber in color with a nice fluffy head. Aroma was caramel and roasted grains. Taste was caramel, nutty roasted grains and malty goodness. Nice.

500ml bottle. Cloudy, amber colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Mellow malty, minimally doughy yeasty and yeasty fruity aroma, hints of caramel, a touch of brioche, a touch of cherry and red berries as well, cherry bonbon. Taste is mellow malty and yeasty fruity, minimally bitter, grassy hoppy, hints of red berries and caramel, some cherry, cherry bonbon. Watery texture, minimally dry palate, fine, prickly carbonation. Balanced, fairly meaty - nice.

A yeastyish mrzen, decent malt complexity, on the sweeter side. Not bad but not grabbing me.

Undated canned at B. United, drunk 10/27/23. Clear, glowing amber. Small, butter-colored head recedes quickly to ring. Very bready. Some light hop spiciness, light fruit jam (strawberry and apricot). Breadiness calms down on the finish leaving more fruitiness and base malt. Clean. Earthy and spicy hop notes mix with a very round, borderline syrupy malt. Big depth, fairly sweet but balanced by hop and yeast. Intense and richly malted but mostly balanced. Lingering, light bitterness helps. They certainly did a good job with the mashing here. Pretty Heller bock-like.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Cloudy amber pour, small off-white foamy head. Brown bread aroma with a touch of sweet malt. Taste is malty, rich, sweet, full. Nice heavy mouthfeel too. This is so much better than the ratings reflect.

16 oz. draft @ The Mansion. Dark bronze color with a small off white head. Definitely has a Euro Oktoberfest flavor. Decent caramel flavor with a little Euro skunk mixed in. Okay. Kinda generic.

On tap at Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten. Cloudy amber red with a moderate frothy tan head. Aroma is toasted malt and earthy hops with a mild caramel sweetness. Flavor is bready with sweet malt, light caramel and some herbal hops. Medium body and carbonation. Overall, a decent Marzen with nice complexity.
