An annual Allagash tradition, Hugh Malone Ale is a blend of both Belgian and U.S. brewing methods. This limited-release beer combines the intense aromas of American hop varieties with the delicate esters found in Belgian-style yeast. Hugh Malone is brewed with a blend of two-row malt, munich malt, oats, and raw wheat. Each year, multiple pilot batches are run to experiment with different hop combinations in search of the right balance of citrus, fruit, pine, and spice notes. While there is a commonality between the hops used in Hugh Malone each year, there’s always great variety. This year’s Hugh Malone uses Nugget as first wort hops, added before the boil even starts. Chinook are mixed in as the wort comes to a boil. Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial are added in the whirlpool. Then additional Centennial, Simcoe, Denali, and Citra are used to dry hop the beer.

Grains: Pilsner Malt, Raw Wheat, Munich Malt, Oats

Hops: Nugget, Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, Denali, Citra

Backlog February 2009. Unclear orange body under a nice off-white head. Aroma has malt, caramel and Belgium yeast. Taste is Smooth and harmonic with malt, caramel, slightly fruity, a touch of Belgium yeast and fruity hops. Balanced bitterness. Medium body with a pleasant aftertaste.

Thanks altonbrownd for the bottle! Poured into a snifter showing well filtered golden yellow with a finger of quickly dissipating clean white foam. The nose shows strong Belgian yeast influence with light pine hops around the edges. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Flavors of Belgian yeasty forwardness and light bready malts ending on a moderate hoppy and tea-like astringent bitterness. Somewhat out of place but it’s alright.

Pour is a cloudy looking yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a nice fruity hop with some esters in the back to let you know this is not a typical IPA. Flavor is more of a fruity hop. Not much of the Belgian yeast shows up in the flavor. More grapefruit hops are left on the tongue as this goes down. Decent IPA I just wish more of the yeast came out to play.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home while nervously flipping between Bears/Packers and NLCS game 5. This is a good beer to be nervous with. Appearance is pale yellow with a rich frothy white head. Aroma is abundant with citrus, orange peel, grapefruit, lot going on. Taste is equally good, goes down bitter and tart, rich in lemon notes, light ale yeast. Really good one here.

Pours a slightly hazy yellow from a bottle, some lacing. Not much aroma, maybe a little lemon. Citusy flavor, settles into dry grapefruit. Specifically honest to goodness original yellow--not pink--grapefruit. Good beer.

On tap at Blind Tiger, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, lots of hops, and a touch of candied sugar. Flavour is a bit jagged, with dry hopping and Belgian yeast competing for front runner. Harsher than most Allagash beers I've had. Good, but needs refinement.

12 ounce bottle. Hazy pale gold color. Large creamy white head. Fresh yeasty nose with notes of lemon zest and citrus hops. First sip yields fruity, yeasty malt with notes of lemon, apricot and melon. The bready, yeasty notes are nicely balanced by the complex, spicy piney hops. At 7.7% ABV, the alcohol hides well. This is an amazing beer with complex flavors abounding. A must have.

Shared by KyotoLefty. Hugh Malone from Allagash is a surprisingly clear pale gold with a big fluffy white head and a lovely fruity aroma. Soft round carbonation, grapes and citrus, spices plus a bit of hop vine character. A flavorful beer.

Bottle. Clean malt nose, citrus fruits and fruity, spicy Belgian yeast character. Soft, silky body. Great citrus flavors from the hops, nicely done.
