An annual Allagash tradition, Hugh Malone Ale is a blend of both Belgian and U.S. brewing methods. This limited-release beer combines the intense aromas of American hop varieties with the delicate esters found in Belgian-style yeast. Hugh Malone is brewed with a blend of two-row malt, munich malt, oats, and raw wheat. Each year, multiple pilot batches are run to experiment with different hop combinations in search of the right balance of citrus, fruit, pine, and spice notes. While there is a commonality between the hops used in Hugh Malone each year, there’s always great variety. This year’s Hugh Malone uses Nugget as first wort hops, added before the boil even starts. Chinook are mixed in as the wort comes to a boil. Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial are added in the whirlpool. Then additional Centennial, Simcoe, Denali, and Citra are used to dry hop the beer.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a bright golden color with a large foamy white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was dryish and bitter with floral and perfumey hops and hints of dust and must. The flavor was dryish and bitter with perfumey, herbal and floral hops and hints of dust and chalk. Medium length finish. Medium body. Interesting.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a cloudy golden color with a nice, medium (to large) white head. Aroma was notes of citrus, malts and notes of light spice character. Citrus grapefruit, nice hoppy notes, with a touch of bitterness. Very flavorful, alcohol is well masked in this one. Very pleasant and enjoyable.

Draft @ The Great Lost Bear, Portland, ME. Served in a 12 oz. chalice. Hazy gold with amber type hue. The head died to a small ring around the glass. Light lacing. I can still remember the Allagash yeast smell. This brew indeed has that type yeast with a spicy, peppery hop that shows a strong amount of citrus. They did a great job with making a fine marriage of Belgian yeast and Simcoe hops. As it gets to room temperature it does give off more malt and the hops taste more grassy then the initial citrus. Medium-bodied and very well carbonated. The texture is crisp with a light bitter finish. I can see how this may not be as good in a bottle. Especially if it sits for any long length in time. Best consumed fresh. My100th rating from the State of Maine!!
