This ale-type beer was created for PALM brewer Alfred Van Roy’s 90th birthday. The ultimate expression of his passion for the distinct fermentation fruitiness of his personally selected PALM yeasts. A real royal treat of a beer. Its appearance is copper-coloured, with a rich, white head which clings to the glass. The aroma is reminiscent of banana; the flavour has bite with a great deal of body. The beer is slightly sweet due to the alcohol, but is nevertheless somewhat bitter and fruity too. Re-fermentation gives the beer a pleasant, dry aftertaste.

(33cl bottle) Clear, golden colour with a fluffy, dense white foam. Sweet, bready, cara-malty and slightly sourish fruity nose. Sweet flavour with a tinge of acidity, medium body impression at most, moderately carbonated mouthfeel. Cara-malty, slightly bready and minimal fruity taste; sweet malty finish with slightly tart and bitter flavours. Rather weak pale Ale (29.01.08).

Kiev airport bar called Belgian Beer Cafe, seems to be a chain, this is the only beer not available in the States. Color is completely clear amber orange but too much refracting light to clearly see through it. No head, with a thin halo lacing. Aroma is burnt malts with light pear fruitiness, kind of cheap and faintly medicinal. Taste is cheap metallic fruits with light pilsner malts and a light cheap sweetness. Light bodied but with a harsh, overly-aggressive mouthfeel.

Bottle. Medium ornage color with a average, frothy, fair lacing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate yeasty, light malty, toasted, bread, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Overall a average strong Belgian beer.

Bottle. Golden beer with a small disapearing beige head. Aroma is fruity with caramel and alcohol. A sweet, rather malty, flavor, with caramel. Alcoholic metallic finish. Medium-bodied with lots of carbonation (too much maybe).

33cl bottle from Noel Cuveliers. Clear gold/copper colour with thin off white head. Curious lager/ale aroma. Citrus hoppy aroma too, bit empty in the mouth, some toffeeish malt. More syrupy lemon hop on finish. Alcohol is very evident due to lack of malt. Unsubtle and a bit crude.

As "Royal", the Royal Caribbean house brew, acquired on Jewel of the Seas. Slightly hazy dull amber, big bubbles, loose head, no sediment in the bottle. Caramel aroma with butterscotch (more Werther’s than diacetyl), sour apple, a little alcohol and copper. Sweet palate...like one of those cloying new world tripels only less intense and with a hugely metallic finish. The second pour deposits copious protein chunks into the glass. Still a month prior to its BBD. Hrm. Finish shows too much alcohol. I’m inclined to praise Royal Caribbean for going in this direction for their signature brew, not the least reason of which is because it represents a unique addition to their standard brew lineup, but I’m conflicted because this really isn’t a good beer. It’s not dumbed down, thankfully, but from the protein chunks to the strong alcohol note to the mix of unpleasant aromatic components there just isn’t much good going for it.
