It’s not often that a great summer swell coincides with a full moon, but when they collide, nature affords us a rare opportunity to paddle out long after everyone has called it a day. These moments are a solitary pursuit with empty lineups, but those who carve graceful lines under a full moon understand how things can be dark lonely and rewarding at the same time.
So next time you paddle in from an overcrowded beach break, remember that nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a session. We suggest a glass of this smooth roasty black lager for contemplating empty lineups and waves that go on for days. Most likely, you’ll long for epic summer swells under moon lit sessions opening the doors to isolation and empty secret spots of an age trying to pass us by.

Bottle, Beer Moth, Manchester. Black pour with a mid range lingering tan head. Bready beak with notes of malt and chocolate. Fullish body. Roast led flavour with some burnt notes. Steadily building chocolate hit with some bitterness in the finish which was a satisfying one. Not like any lager I’ve ever tasted but that is only to its great credit. Enjoyable stuff.

65 cl bottle @ home, bottled 26.12.2012
Aroma is somewhat floury with roasted notes, some salty licorice, coffee, soy sauce, cocoa and hay. Flavour has soy sauce, some woody notes, salty licorice and hints of coffee. Even more salt in the finish. Good, but I expected more; too much salt and hay here.

Pours pitch black with a smooth foamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, hints of smoke, leather and ash. Taste is smooth, carbonated, roasty and chocolatey with notes of coffee, biscuity malts and ash. Finish is quite carbonated with some roastiness and notes of chocolate, biscuity malts and ash. Quite balanced and tasty.

650ml bottle. Red glowing darkest brown colour with average, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Dark malty aroma has hints of grainy coffee surrogate, some real coffee, some hay, a spicy touch of green onions, hints of liquorice. Taste is dry, minimally roasty dark malty with a minimally metallic touch, some liquorice, subtle coffee notes, slightly bitter and minimally grassy hoppy overtones with a peppery touch, lasting dry finish. This is a Schwarzbier pushed to the limits with all the potential of the style (apart from variations) bailed out.

Bottle @ home picked up at Argonaut Denver. Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a fluffy, dark brown head. Very roasty, charred malty, a touch smoky, coffee, mild chocolate, a bit herbal aroma. Dark fruity, burnt malty, chocolate, caramelized sugary flavor that’s a bit thin on the finish. Fairly light bodied. Solid but not overwhelmingly good for the style
