We got together with Stefan Gustavsson from Mohawk Brewery in Sweden to make this one. So what to brew with a metal-loving Swede who named his brewery after a punk hairstyle? It’s got to be a big, bad, hoppy black IPL like this one.
A black lager with the hop profile of an IPA – literally the hoppiest beer ever brewed at Camden Town Brewery – dry-hopped with a whopping 24 kilos of Columbus, Galaxy, Mosaic & Simcoe, the most we’ve ever packed into a beer, the hop bitterness complimented by the roast character of the darker malts that make this a Black IPL.
Available in keg and bottle.

Keg at Euston Tap. It pours near black with a decent tan head. The nose is bitter-sweet, rich roast, earth, cocoa, pine needles and sherbety citrus. The taste is bitter, earthy, roasted malt, toast, cocoa, piney action, orange rind and a touch of liquorice with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good depth and full in flavour, yet rather drinkable. A very nice BIPA by all accords.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at the brewery. Pours rich black-brown with a dense, creamy beige head. Nice aroma with plenty of chocolate malts, some ripe orange and other citrus, mild pine. Medium sweet flavor with well roasted malts, a bit of bitter cocoa, some dark bread, a bit of piney and earthy bitterness, more citrus. Medium bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Nicely balanced on the finish with notes of baking cocoa, burnt toast, earth, orange rind, grapefruit juice, some oily pine, burnt sugars. Lovely stuff overall. Quite well balanced throughout.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Dark brown, rich beige head. Concentrated hoppy aroma with mango, peach and lychee. Mid sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Licorice and tropical fruits Really bitter finish. Not really a schwarzbier in any traditional sense.
