We got together with Stefan Gustavsson from Mohawk Brewery in Sweden to make this one. So what to brew with a metal-loving Swede who named his brewery after a punk hairstyle? It’s got to be a big, bad, hoppy black IPL like this one.

A black lager with the hop profile of an IPA – literally the hoppiest beer ever brewed at Camden Town Brewery – dry-hopped with a whopping 24 kilos of Columbus, Galaxy, Mosaic & Simcoe, the most we’ve ever packed into a beer, the hop bitterness complimented by the roast character of the darker malts that make this a Black IPL.

Available in keg and bottle.

Euston Tap. Keg. Murky dark brown beer, short pale cream colour head. The beer has body but is also quite crisp. Smooth dark malts with touches of roast and dark chocolate. Malt cream. Hops are a great mix of skunk, pine, spice and a light touch of tropical fruits. Finishes smooth, semi dry and bitter. Very tasty and very drinkable. This is far beyond a Schwarz and well and truly a Black IPA.

330ml Bottle - Very dark brown, almost black. Liquorice, roasted malt, soapy hops, pine and a hint of blackcurrant in the aroma. Roasted and bitter taste with liquorice, coffee, chocolate, blackcurrant and soapy hops detected. It’s hard to pick up many lager-like qualities from this as it tastes more like a black IPA than a schwarzbier, even if it was fermented differently to one.

Keg at the Euston Tap, 02/09/14. Light black with a well appointed khaki covering that stays for the show. Nose is earthy roast, pine coating, bitter hops, straw, citric rind, red grapefruit, light smoke. Taste comprises bitter hops, pine, dank notes, light cocoa rub, liqourice, red berry pangs. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close peppered with hop bitterness and pine. Yeah ... Black IPA and a decent one at that!

Very dark reddish beer with a light malty aroma. Flavour is bitter, hoppy with very light fruityness and you can taste the ’lager’ aspect of it. Light taste but plenty of earthy body. Very nice.

Keg @ Euston Tap. Pours black with a decent off-white head and hoppy / malt aroma. Complex taste blending roasted malts, citrussy coal & pine hops with a lovely bitter finish. Nice.
