CBS was born when we stumbled upon some bourbon barrels that had previously housed maple syrup. We opted to put the same base beer as KBS, an imperialized version of Breakfast Stout, in the maple barrels and, after one taste, we knew we had something special. Rich maple syrup, roasted coffee and velvety chocolate meld together in what can only be described as a transcendental drinking experience.

2017 bottle at home. Pours black with a brownish hue and quickly dissipating head. Nose is chocolate, coffee and bourbon. Taste is chocolate with underlying coffee, bourbon and light maple notes, extremely smooth and drinkable, barely any oxidation is present, the coffee also holds up surprisingly good. The body is medium on it, the carbonation is low to average. I can see how this was an epic beer 10+ years ago.

Bottle from the lcbo. Black pour, with a medium mocha head. Aroma is chocolate dipper espresso beans, sticky, sweet maple Bourbon, and some dark vanilla infused maple cookies. Wow, this is pretty wild stuff. The mouth feel is silky, and coats the mouth beautifully. The carb is soft, but not too soft, just enough liveliness. The finish is medium bitter with a strong coffee and cocoa note, with loads of Bourbon soaked vanilla pods. As it warms the maple comes further and further to the fore front. But the time I'm at the end of the glass the maple has coated everything in a sweet, but yet subtle maple coating. Slightly boozy, but this is a decadent treat, what a stout, incredible stuff.

(Five variant KBS vertical) Poured from 355mL bottle (bb 27.10.2018 - 11.7%; thanks Farees). Very dark brown with small beige head. Feint maple, bourbon character comes more foward here compared to original KBS. The best balance of the vertical in my opinion. Held up despite it's age.

Soft and sweet. Dark brown. It's not as rich as I remember, mind you, but has a nice sugary note. I liked this beer better at the time - certainly more maple, and I swear more complexity. But of course it's now 8 years old and the richest impies are far richer than this is today. So I like it, but it's not going to slot into the peak impies anymore.

Bottle from Just In Beer, Groningen. Aroma is roasted malt, wood, maple syrup, chocolate, bourbon, some coffee (but I expected more), mild vanilla. Flavour is quite sweet with pretty robust roasty bitterness. Body is full and velvety, bit sticky. Lots of wood, maple, bourbon and dark malt. Rich, excellent barrel notes.
