Ola Dubh, meaning ‘Black Oil’ in Gaelic, is craftily created by taking our Old Engine Oil and maturing it in 16 year old Highland Park whisky casks. The process is far from simple, but the result is a beautiful brew with complimentary whisky notes and caramel shining through. All thanks to the labour of love of our master brewers.
Hops: East Kent Goldings, Fuggles, Galena
Malts: Lager Malt, Pinhead Oats, Roast Barley
Ola Dubh 16yr tasting notes: On the nose, Ola Dubh 16 has aromas of whisky and sweet roasted malt. The whisky forward flavour is rich with coffee, chocolate and caramel notes all shining through. This ale strikes a sensational balance of fruity sweetness with a complex bitter hop background.

330ml bottle. Pitch black colour with small, frothy to creamy, lasting, lacing, tan head. Whiskey flavours (vanilla, leather) outweigh the basic dark malty aroma (molasses, liquorice). Taste is dark malty with matching, well balanced whiskey notes, minimally tart, dry, a touch of leather.

Bottle at home. Pours a black colour with a medium light brown head. Nice roasted aroma with some sweetness in the end. I find lots of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, burned wood, vanilla, bacon, barbecue sauce, some forest and smoke. Fantastic roasted flavour as well with more roasted malt and bitter dark chocolate. I also taste the sweet barbecue saus and soy sauce. Thick and soft mouth feel, and a medium bitternes. A wonderful, round and well-balanced beer.

Opaque black stout. Much like the 12. Neutral to soft palate. Light malt, very slight roast. Lots of smooth whisky and a hint of vanilla oak. Overall very light for it’s make up.

Purchased a little while back at the LCBO, and just a buck more than their 12 year old reserve version. Bottle No. 22712 on July 2009 and best before: SEP 2012. Pours an almost-black colour with red highlights. The head is beige with a good retention and decent lacing. Nutty nose blending with dark fruits (plums, raisins), sweet malts, mild toffee and light coffee. Smooth taste of roasted malts with molasses, coffee, mild dark fruits and hints of smoke (burnt wood) in the finish. Overall, I think the 12 year old a tad better than this one, except for the smokiness that does not have (but is earthy instead).

Malziger Whiskeybeginn mit stärker werdenden Rauchnoten. Süßlich, dann wird das Malz deutlich stärker, weich, dennoch kurz kratzig und dezent alkoholisch. Leichte Bitterkeit, angenehme Schokoladennoten, rund, sehr gut! 9/11/12/12/13/11
