Jet black oily thick pour. Minimal mocha head. BIG aroma of dark espresso, and soy sauce. Some light licorice, anise, and some dark toffee. The flavor was intense, and soooooo satisfying. Dark coffee, soy, anise just enveloppe my pallet, and are unbelievable. The finish is long and lingering, espresso, and dark burtn malts. This is just an unbelievable beer. I could sip this forever.

Bottle from Nørreport Estate Wine - Beer Paradise. Aroma is roasted malt, sweetish rich chocolate, bitter dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, espresso, coffee beans, mocha, touch of liquorice but not too much as I am touchy about liquorice, cream, wood. Flavour is chocolate malty sweet and moderate bitter. Body is full and creamy, incredibly smooth and drinkable, heavy but not boozy. Simply amazing, dangerously close to Imperial Stout perfection in my book.

Bottle 33 cl. Dark brown, almost black color, noisy foam. Great aroma: very delicate coffee notes, vanilla, caramel, roasted. Gorgeous taste of excellent coffee, sweetish, XO cognac, very rich and well balanced, great brew.

Tap at Mikkeller Berlin. Coffee nose. Black, golden brown cream. Medium full lactose sweetness, chocolate and cocoa, sugary, praline fattiness, somewhat well balanced pastry.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a medium mocha head. Aromas of toffee, coffee beans, dark chocolate, slight sweet dark fruits, some malt. Taste is strong roasted coffee up front, some malty sweetness, dark fruits, dates, some woody notes, bitter dark chocolate.

Tap at Mikkeller Tokyo. Cola, roast, sweetness, coffee, toffee, caramel, dark fruit, light spice. Surprisingly easy drinking, rich and smooth but no hint of the booze. Sweet but not cloying. Lightly spiky and spicy. Good stuff.

2010 bottle pour into snifter at Boneyard Bistro. Appearance is inky, opaque black with no discernible sparkle (though low light in the bar), thin light brown head with decent retention and fair leggy lacing. Aroma is understated roasted malts, earth, dark fruits and anise. Taste is rich roasted malt, chocolate, milder dark fruits, molasses and coffee. Palate is (first half of pour) full bodied with smooth, thick, creamy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste with late earthy bitterness. Second half of pour contained large chunks of a brown sludgy substance from the bottom--but it didn't seem to be only yeast as it had a gel-like quality to it. Overall, maybe 9 years is too long to age--not getting much coffee in either aroma or flavor, which is surprising given the description that there should be a strong taste and even stronger aroma of coffee. Tried to swirl the second pour to see if something had just sort of settled out of it but it didn't change things materially. The first half of the pour was decadent, silky and amazing but the second half was really off putting--especially for a beer that mentions civet cat droppings. Had to leave some in the glass, which was a shame considering the beer and the price. Honestly, disappointing given the reputation. I was expecting transcendence but perhaps I just got a bad one/one that was too old.
