In 1842, our first Brewmaster Josef Groll brewed a beer unlike any other. His crisp, refreshing golden lager was made with local ingredients: sweet Moravian barley, delicately bitter Saaz hops, soft Pilsen water, and bottom-fermenting H-strain yeast. Groll named this special beer after the city where he brewed it, Pilsen, where we still brew the same beer today. Over the last 178 years, pilsner-style lager has become the world’s most popular beer, with seven out of 10 beers in the world imitating Groll’s innovation. There are many pilsner-style beers out there, but only one original.

Tankovnà (unpasteurized), on tap @Le Bon Bock Cafè (Rome). Dorata carica, schiuma bianca abbondante e persistente. Al naso fresche note erbacce e di malto, pane, lievito, biscotto. In bocca è morbida ed equilibrata, attacco maltato con finale amaro deciso ma non invadente. Corpo medio, carbonazione perfetta. Pils eccellente e in stato di grazia.

2016 catch up - bottle at home - It was ok, but a bit gassy and dare I say, a bit watery. There are better Czech pilsners out there.

Perfectly transparent, slightly darker than golden with visible carbonation. Average white head, decent retention and some lacing. Aroma shows a very delicate hay and cereal base, grassy freshness, and lemonish/cedary hints, with just the slightest bit of prickliness to them. Average to slightly sub-average intensity. Taste has a slightly crisp/crackery malts base, slight citric notes, fresh grass and maybe some floral hops hints. Very nicely polished. Medium to low sweetness and medium bitterness, finishes dry and slightly on the bitter side. Light bodied with medium carbonation, lively on the mouth and very easygoing. As a beer that sets a standard, this is of course super precise/polished at that; other examples of the style are richer in taste and softer in the mouth.

Draught at the counting house Eastbourne. One of the better pilsners in the world and feels good to know its story from visiting Plzen. More colour & depth than most. (10/3/17) ---- Draught at Szimpla Kert, Budapest. A beautiful pilsner. 3 to 3.2. (14/10/22) ---- Keg at Bistro Žižkov, Östersund. Not as delightful as in Budapest. 3.2 to 3. (4/11/22) ---- Keg at Sdjak, Česky Krumlov. Once you get past the initial metallic foam, it's brilliantly smooth. 3 to 3.2.

Largely mass produced for popularity. Still better than standard light lagers by a mile. Slight hop aroma and bitterness make it decent. Drank in Munich pub.

Keg at Miller & Carter, Reading. Pale gold with a large white head and a thin, slightly prickly fizz. Grassy flavour, tending towards minerality. Bitter compared to other well-known lagers, although still not that bitter. Dryish, crisp and clean- I can see why some people like it; it does have a certain elegance, but for me personally I found the flavour a little unpleasant.
