Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this imperial pale ale is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered and double dry hopped.

750ml growler (thx, Jonathan J.!). Growlered on 2016-04-01. Pours a cloudy blond with a white head. Aroma is dank, tropical fruits, some dirty notes. Same taste. Moderate to high piney hops bitterness. Hell, again same stuff as Twin Sails, Boombox and Superflux brew. It is definitely good, but I don’t understand why it is so overhyped.

Cloudy blond color, large head. The aroma is dank and with a strong manure component. Lean body, on the dry side, a bit chalky mouthfeel, but the hopping is zesty, citrusy, piney, and some manure. Astringent final.
A bit dirty, but excellent.

Keg at The Farmhouse, Burlington. Cloudy golden, creamy head. Generous pear and passionfruit aroma. Mid sweet with medium-full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Leafy with passionfruit, grapefruit and white currant. Really bitter finish. Quite good, but not really exceptional.

On tap at Fools Gold. It pours a somewhat hazy orange color with a creamy off white head. The aroma has peaches, melon with a little grapefruit and passionfruit. Really fruit forward with a hint of flowers and honey-like maltiness. Maybe a touch of cookie. The flavor has massive peach and passionfruit with strong flowery bitterness. Hints of honey and cookie-like malts, but their supportive and don’t interfere with the hop character. A really nice IIPA.

Tap into a goblet showing unfiltered opaque orange with a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows intense and juicy sweet blood oranges with a light citric edge. The palate is full bodied and smooth but fully carbonated. Flavors of concentrated orange, grapefruit, and light kiwi. Mid-palate shows a subtle grainy malt edge but mostly fruit. Strong grapefruit bitterness with a big grainy malt aftertaste. A big IIPA.

Tap. Three Penny Taproom, Montpelier, VT. Cloudy, dark, yellow gold. Thick, bubbly, white head that collapses to a ring and film. Pine resin dank. Some pink pink grapefruit. Clean, sweet biscuit malts. Taste is smooth, resinous bitter. Sweetness on the lips. Really drinkable and clean. Big depth, though. Finishes zesty, resinous bitter.

LSAT Freedom Trip #218. Growler from the brewery, shared at a tasting. Clear golden amber, floaties, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of resin, piney, earthy, mild tropical hops, pale malt. The taste is tropical, resin, pine, citrus hops and pale malt. Medium bodied, lignering bitterness, well balanced.
