Maybe you’ve seen him. Maybe you’ve only heard about him. He’s tricky like that, dear old Crunkle Sam. But a good time seems to follow him wherever it goes, also a bad ass bald eagle.
Crunkle Sam is our American Barleywine that we revisit every so often. This year we chose to bring it back, bourbon barrel-aged and in a big, beautiful 19.2oz can. The legend continues…

(Bottle) Dark amber colour, hazy, with foamy off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of apricot puree, orange, caramel, honey and rye bread. Fruity, malty taste with apricots, rye bread, orange marmalade, caramel, honey, toffee and a mild piney bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, sweet. More focus on caramelly malt than on hops. Tasty and well balanced. Very nice.

Hazy darkish amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, a light creamy toffee, that gets a little bitter. Rich dried fruits and ripe fruits. A touch of Port wine berry sweetness. Smooth finish. Good stuff. Rich, toffee and with ripe berry fruits. Classic barleywine.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours a clear, dark copper with a creamy, beige head. Amazing aroma the way only American breweries can get it, this mushy, caramellish, slightly oxidized and biscuity. Rich, warming body, plenty of crystal malts yet with enough balancing hops. Totally straight and well composed US Barley Wine. 131217

A pour from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Vintage 2014. Pours a hazy copper with a tan head. Aroma is very fruity, a bit bready and oxidized. Taste similar, sweet and bitter at the same time. Good.

Inget extraordinärt, men ruskigt gott.

Sampled from the tap at All Pints North 2017. Pours a hazy reddish amber with a yellowish tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has notes of sweet grains, caramel and toffee with a bit of citrus underlying. Flavor has lots of sweet grains with grass, pine, caramel and toffee supporting.

Flaska från SB, knappt ett år gammal. I det här skicket stilmässigt någonstans mellan klassisk och US BW. kletig vätska, lite gräddig, maltfokuserad och marmeladig med honung, torkade päron. Väl intgrerad alkohol. Gott.

Bottle to snifter, the appearance was a murky dark mahogany color with a fingers worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Slim concave lace.
The aroma had some sweet dried dark fruits, light leather, subtle earthiness, vanilla, driftwood, dried leaves and light smoke.
The flavor took all of the prior mentioned aromas to boot and seemed to have the normal level of tobacco that I usually get in this style. Aftertaste was brisk and sweet. Finish followed suite.
The palate was medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt just a touch under than what was projected, but I wasnt bothered by that.
Overall, pretty nice barleywine seemed to lean towards the English side more than the American, in my opinion.

Ever so slightly hazy deep copper and amber coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of pit fruits, alcohol, toffee, caramelised sugars, a lot of malt, some oak and vanilla and a bit of funk noticeable - but very strong throughout. Full-bodied; Deep dry, bitter malt flavours at first with a lot of alcohol and dry whiskey flavours along with some grain, peat, alcohol, yeast and a touch of caramel sweetness - pungent, but showing relatively well. Aftertaste is bitter, strong as hell and robust throughout. Overall, a good Barley Wine with a fairly complex and pungent profile that shows some, but not entirely, malty and smooth flavours that mellow out this beer. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 28-March-2015 for US$9,99 sampled at home in Washington on 06-May-2017.

Clear dark golden color with a fine frothy head. Good intensity in the aroma. Full body and a fine carbonation level. Sweet, but not to sweet. Oily texture. Dried fruits, toffee, bready and candy in the flavor.
