Corruption, Greed and Lust, they’re all represented on the books today. Tomorrow they’ll be stringing Gluttony, Desire and Sloth. Go ahead, tell yourself you’re better than all of them. But you can’t. Hell can be funny like that. Down here it’s all just sin. Everyone here is screwed just like you. They don’t care who you sliced, diced or cheated. No one is escaping this heinous place.
Your roommate is an axe murderer. Eerily, he’s not threatening. How can he be? The Fallen Angel owns your body, mind and soul. As such, no one can take your life. It’s already been taken. Or was it given? Neither matters. Did you seriously think you were living a virtuous life? At least Satan serves beer in Hell. He brews it himself right there in that flame stoked cauldron. Rumor has it the beer is straw yellow, bone dry and simply labeled Inferno.

One of the Lost Abbey beers, this one imitating the Belgian Duvel style, apparently. Off-white, irregular, sticky head, warm orange blonde colour with vivid sparkling, clear but misty after adding the deposit but keeping its warm orange hue. Powerfully fruity nose of pineapple, orange juice, apple peel, vanilla, ginger, banana liqueur, white wine, honey, pepper; overwhelmingly fruity taste with sharp, fresh citrus character and strong, mineral-like carbonation on a smooth and supple, caramelly and honeyishly malty basis, bit oily mouthfeel, spiciness evolving into a long, aromatic hop bitterness with hints of citrus and tonic water, complex and dry. Very American and very enjoyable take on a classic Belgian style.

Active bottle foams upon popping of the cork. Yeast and citrus fruit dominate the aroma. Pours with high bubbly, foamy head, cloudy pale golden body. Taste is mostly grapefruit and citrus, list and bubbly mouthfeel, effervescent , some yeast on the finish.

Bottle in the hotel room, SD, from Lost Abbey/Port, 20/04/14. Clear golden yellow with a big old white head that dissipates then settles down for the rate. Nose is yeast esters, spice, lemon rind, light booze, corriander, straw, caramel. Taste comprises much the same, bubblegum, yeast esters, spice, orange peel, lemon rind, straw, hint of vanilla, woody tinge. Medium bodied with a little va va vroom, fine carbonation, light booze in a drying close. Solid Belgian offering.

750ml bottle. Clear golden colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Strawy, slightly yeasty and sweetish, fruity aroma. Taste is dry, strawy, minimally fruity, hints of dried apricot, bitter hoppy overtones. Can’t take pleasure in that one.

2008 Bottle, aged 5 years+: Hazy golden coloured body with a rich, thick three centimetre just off-white head that fades fairly quickly. Aroma of alcohol, yeast, grain, hay, white pepper, a touch of sour grapes and a little brett. Light to Medium-bodied; Grassy herbal flavour with a very smooth sweetness, some light honey, a touch of flowers and dry oak and a bit of complex yeast strains. Aftertaste shows a very smooth, robust yeast and grassy flavour with a little bit of herbal notes tucked throughout with a good sweetness. Overall, a nice and super subtle and mellow beer with more of a yeast taste than anything else - this was a saison, pure and simple, no belgian anything about it. Great to sample, especially with the age, which I think helped it, almost perfectly in this case. I sampled this 2008 aged 75 cL bottle purchased from City Beer in San Francisco, California on 29-June-2010 for US$11.99 sampled at home in Washington on Christmas Eve [24-December-2013] 2013. Bottle Dated (hang tag) 2008 // Purchased 2010 // Sampled 2013
