Barrel Aged Barleywine

Bourbon Wizard is a barrel aged Barleywine with a monstrous malt bill and a boil time of 6 hours and 66 minutes creating a full-bodied deep, dark amber behemoth with high residual malty sweetness of caramel and toffee. These colossal flavors are then magnified by ample additions of raisins during fermentation. A year’s worth of bourbon barrel aging imparts favorable complements of vanilla and charred oak, adding to this palate impacting experience.

Came into this with low expectations but the hops and flavor comes through the barrel

Draft in snifter. Milky, bourbon aroma, but not boozy. Caramel, with just a hint of fruit. Very smooth with no big alcohol kick.

Draft at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Garnet body, thin ring of cream-colored bubbles. Sharp nose with bourbon and alcohol, backed by toast and oxidized caramels. Hot body with bourbon heat and dry, tannic oak, mostly a punch of toasty malts, coconut, and vanilla. Hot but rich with subtle interplay among the elements. Very good.

On tap at Falling Rock, GABF weekend

Aroma: Bourbon, vanilla and toasted malts

I really enjoyed this beer, smooth and full of bourbon without being overly hot.

On tap at Short’s. This pours a very deep red with an off-white head. Aroma is straight-up bourbon, vanilla and oaky. Flavor is pretty much the same, oaky and vanilla bourbon. Bit of light alcohol burn. Can’t really find any of the original beer in here, which is okay because The Wizard didn’t impress me that much in the first place. But even with just having the clear bourbon flavor, or rather because of it, I do find this to be quite tasty.

Tasted at the big “SeaBass has got to go” tasting courtesy of HOPSHUNTER. 12oz bottle pours amber and ruby with tiny white head. The aroma is molasses, a touch of vanilla, spicy oak, cherries, a little bit of prune and more molasses deep into the draw. The taste is rich for sure with prunes and aged ripe cherries and quickly moves into rich yummy molasses, smooth mild spicy oak and modest sweet smooth bourbon getting just a touch boozy into the finish. It almost has a yummy chocolate covered molasses for moments here and there. Into the finish prune, cherry and dates help take this to a tasty closure. This is way richer and smooth and yummier than the non barrel aged version I had just a few minutes ago. The barrel compliments perfectly here and doesn’t get in the way of this beer rich barleywine beeriness. Well done.

Dog Days of Summer Gathering. pours darker brown, tan/mocha head. roasted malts and caramel with a more chocolate approach. There is some lingering vanilla that complements the barrel aging that at times might seem too present. Palate is thick with a mild bitter barrel note. Alcohol is definitely present.

Sampled at the RBSG ’10 Grand Tasting. Thanks to Shorts and the organizers for setting this up for us. Poured a slightly murky dark brown with a yellowish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was very bourbon forward with caramel and toffee backing the bourbon and maybe just a hint of pine. Flavor started with caramel and toffee with bourbon growing towards the finish.
