The original ale first brewed in 1965 and now sold all over the world. Perhaps the most distinctive Scottish ale on the market and with its rich dark oakiness, this is a serious winter ale.

Old rating - A 330ml bottle I brought some 4 years or so ago on a trip to Scotland, best before Aug 24. It pours a very dark brown with a white head. Aromas & tastes of dark fruits, caramel, vanilla, oak, chocolate, raisins, figs, hints of spice & sweet malt. Medium body. Dry fruity & malty finish. Excellent

Dark brown with a creamy, beige head. Big molasses aroma. Burnt grains. Raisins. Taste has a fruity sweetness, full of prunes, raisins and licorice with some burnt, bitter aftertones. Body to the full side of medium, mild carbonation, chewy, faint alcoholic warmth. Fairly intense. Definitely a slow sipper. Good one.

I got this in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!
It's been years since I had this:
It pours from 11.2oz bottle a dark brown that has a lot of reddish colour when held up to the light. Small and quickly disappearing head of foam with very little lacing.
The smell is very nice. Lots of dark fruit, caramel malt, fig, and some alcohol and butterscotch.
The taste is firstly dark fruit with plum and fig followed by some caramel malt and a bit of citrus that adds just a bit of tartness and bitterness for balance. Nice. The dark fruit is really ruling it and pretty much dominates the flavour several sips in and the alcohol is very well hidden with just some warming after the swallow. One fine sipper I have here. The mouthfeel is medium to medium full and it's lightly carbonated. Man, I wish I knew why I haven't bought it the times I made my visits to Colorado because I'm *really* enjoying the hell out of it. Highly recommended!
