The original ale first brewed in 1965 and now sold all over the world. Perhaps the most distinctive Scottish ale on the market and with its rich dark oakiness, this is a serious winter ale.

Chevy Chase, DC 330ml ($5.49): Pours brownish red with a rather small white head. Caramel, cake (I canβt believe someone else described this aroma as cake), plenty of malts, biscuit, fruit, and some other fancy shmancy things. Incredibly drinkable and makes me want to drink all of it. Extremely well-balanced. Some hop bitterness and a modicum of astringency. A teeny-weeny bit of sugar, but not on the sweet side. An excellent beer, which I wish was cheaper than it is.

Bottle from Nelson Wines. It pours hazy dark brown with a red hue and a thin fizzy white head. The nose is sweet caramel, dried fruit, milk chocolate and toffee. The taste is vanilla, caramel, wood, liquorice, toffee, leather, smoke, tobacco, lactose, plum, dried cherry and milk chocolate, with a fruity finish.Very well balanced. A bit like a Scotch Ale-Belgian dubbel cross. High quality stuff.

The color is pretty, a dirty dark red that turns amber in the light, but the head too quickly retreats to the unwanted "Thin Doughnut" position. Smells Scottish, for damn sure, cakelike with earthy funk underneath. Starts moderately sweet, yet develops a biscuits-n-butter character that bleeds into a dry, whisky-soaked finish. Lax carbonation means the flavors linger on the palate like a barrel of Scotch, thick and easy to drink. (3/16/09)

Bottle @Maltainen Riekko. Poured brown color with a white head, nice lacing. Aroma is dark fruits, raisin and yeast. Flavor is also quite complex, same fruitiness, wood and malt, finish is quite dry, flavor stays quite long in the mouth. Really enjoyable.

Bottle. Clear dark reddish brown with a small pale beige head. Heavy aroma of toffee, prunes, dates. Syrupy mouthfeel at first. Very sweet with toffee and dark fruits. Finish is slightly drying and woody but somehow lightens the sweetness a lot more than expected.

Pours a deep mohogany with red tint. Head is full beige but was fleeting. Massive aroma of fig, prune and date. Chocolate as well. Very nice, rich nose. Mouthfeel is medium with slight slickness. Chocolate with some malty sweetness. Like a winter warmer. I would pair this with a molten lava chocolate cake.

Pours dark brown, almost red in the glass. Nose and taste of alcohol, slight fruits. Decent, but lacked complexity for me. I should re rate this. Itβs been awhile. Rated 7/17/2000
