Old rating from 10-08-16 - A gift from a friend who found & brought it back from Thailand of all places. A 330ml bottle with a very simple but smart black & white printed label. Pours a hazy orange amber colour with thin quickly diminishing off-white head that leaves lacing. Aromas of malts, pine, caramel, orange, tea, tropical fruit, hops and citrus. Tastes of a crisp, bitter-sweet, piney resin, peach, caramel, orange peel, slight chewiness and some warming alcohol with a dry medium bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation.

Bottle at De Drie Dorstige Herten, Utrecht. Aroma of ripe fruits, orange, lots of pine resin, malt, caramel, shitloads of hops. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Body is full. Interesting hop bomb of a beer, but pine resin and sweetish ripe fruits are so overwhelming that there’s no room for fresh fruity bitter hoppiness to shine.

Tap @ Borefts 2015. Golden color. Malt, tropical fruit and grassy notes in the aroma. Firmly hopped. Grassy citric flavor with tropical; fruit. Piney notes in the long finish. Not really overwhelming hops, but fruit all over the place. Bottle. Bergamot, citrus and grass in the aroma. Malty sweetish, bergamot, heavily hopped, loads of fruit. White Pepper.

Bottle from Wijnegemse Drankenhal. Imperial IPA(’-ish’) by De Molen with rye malt and no less than seven hop varieties in total; the name - atypical for De Molen in not being binary - refers to the grams of hops per litre. Moussy, coarse and bubbly, snow white head quickly thinning in the middle but well retaining on the edge, over a hazy deep orange-amber beer with somewhat pinkish hue; turns into a more ’muddy’, brownish hued amberish bronze with sediment added. Rich, strong and fragrant New World hoppiness in the nose, with hints of pink grapefruit, guava, paprika powder, moist chicken spices, overripe mango, biscuit, cheese crackers, pink pepper, pine resin, bitter orange flesh, calvados, freshly cut habanero peppers, cedar essential oil, moist brown bread, fresh toast. Fruity onset, vivid but clean as it ought to be, sweetish guava, mango and lychee mixed with sourish passion fruit and gooseberries, softish carbo, full but slick, oily, rather vinous mouthfeel. Well-crafted biscuity malt sweet core with a sweeter caramelly accent as well as noticeable ’grey’ bread spiciness of the rye, supporting a long, resinous, spicy, aromatically hoppy finish, retronasally piney and grapefruity, and at the same time leaving behind a wormwood-like bitterness matching well with the remainders of the biscuity maltiness and a dash of warming, whisky-like alcohol. De Molen rarely disappoints, and this is not just ’IIPA-ish’ as the label says, this is a full-fledged American West Coast-style imperial IPA at a high quality level, with the piney Chinook coming through perhaps a bit more than the others, but not entirely pushing aside the more delicate tropical fruit aspects of the Mosaic, the exotic pepper aspects of the Columbus or the sweet citrus aspects of the Cascade or Citra. Well done, but frankly I did not expect anything less from this world class brewer.
