Bottle at Winterbierfestival Gouda. Clear dark amber with beige head. Sweet malts, lots of herbs, light aniseed, coriander, cloves, alcohol, dry grassy notes. Quite sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied with dry finish. Meh.

Scotch-style winter ale, like there are many in Belgium, but this one is from the Netherlands. Warm, coppery bronze colour, almost clear with a slight haze of dead yeast particles; thinnish but relatively stable, off-white, irregular head. Aroma of toasted bread, cookie dough, balsamic vinegar, caramel candy, dried ginger, roasted chestnuts, dried leaves, banana, dried orange peel, peach, freshly baked cake. Caramelly taste with a slightly sourish touch, spices clearly present but subtle enough, dried fruits, some peach and red berries, yeasty and somewhat starchy mouthfeel; nutty and caramelly malt sweetishness, retronasal spiciness in a rather subdued way; toasted accent, becoming more prominent at the back of the tongue, supported by herbal hop bitterishness and some warming, brandy-like alcohol, which, in all, remains well hidden. Quite decent.

30cl Bottle, leftover from Winterbierfestival ’13. Slightly hazy ruby amber colour, off white head. Aroma of a clear infection, sour, forest fruits, tart berries, some caramel sweetness. Flavour is quite sour, fruity, chlorine, forest fruits, it’s off. Medium-bodied.
