9th July 2016: on-tap in BierCaB Barcelona with the RBESG guys. Poured jet black with a small tanned head. Aroma was all about roasted malts with chocolate esters. The taste similar with chocolate flavours coming from the malty base: liked it. Good dry finish to a fine Imp Stout: another heavily alcohol brew during our session in BierCaB.

From tap. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty, breadish, roasted and darkchocolate malty. Bitter and roasted dry finish. Bitter and dark malty. Dry, roasted. Breadish finish.

ABC Dutch Summer Tasting. Shared bottle. Black with light tan head. Sweet roasted chocolate malts. Very malty, chocolate milky, sugary, molasses, dank yeastiness. Very sweet, light bitter. bottle shared at the Dutch summer tasting. Thin ring tan head. Clear black pour. Very smooth.

Black with nice light brown head. Strong roasted malts, licorice, black coffee, soft mineral notes, burn toast, toffee, ash. Medium sweet and bitter with the bitterness lasting quite long in a very roasted way. Over medium bodied with oily feel and low carbonation. Strong on the roasted notes.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Near black with a ring tan head. Aroma of big malt, licorice, caramel and toffee. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Above medium bodied with soft carbonation.

2014 Bottle: Deep, pitch black coloured body with a thinnish, oily deep brown head, only about a half centimetre thick. Aroma of super roasted malts, licorice, tobacco, leather, earth, mushrooms and heaps of both - bourbon and vanilla. Medium to Full-bodied; Lighter in body than I expected, but much sweeter than I expected as well with bunches of lactose and vanilla coming through, all with a good deal of mushrooms, oak, dry yeast and a touch of oats as well. Aftertaste shows some nice rounded flavours with a little sweetness, a touch of the grain, some bitterness from the roast and a subdued licorice and spice character. Overall, a nice beer throughout with a good character that shows some light aging very well and after a further five years, it should round out very nicely, but the body might be gone altogether, I’m afraid. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 31-January-2015 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington on perhaps one of the last chilly evenings of the season on 22-May-2016. 2014 Bottle (Bottling Date Unknown) on Screenprint // Purchased: 31-January-2015 // Sampled: 22-May-2016. So, with that bottle aged a further five years, as oddly suggested by myself nearly three years ago, the beer has gotten better: 2014 Bottle (from Screenprint), purchased in 2015, sampled in 2019: Pitch black coloured body with an oily glow and a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, light coffee and chocolates with a touch of molasses and a faint bit of vanilla on the edges. Medium-bodied; Super strong roasted or burnt malt and coffee notes with some lactose, a good deal of earth, bourbon and more vanilla than imaginable, especially for the style, but it shows well throughout. Aftertaste is good with vanilla, grain, bourbon, oak, roasted malt, toffee and pungent burnt coffee flavours that hit nicely and leave a complex pungent profile throughout. Overall, a very nice beer that has done well in the bottle. While I don't believe I have any more of these, this would probably still be better in 5 MORE years. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in [Old Town] Alexandria, Virginia on 12-March-2015 for US$8,99 sampled at my house during the first snowstorm of the year on 13-January-2019, almost four years after the purchase and five years after the beer was produced. Tasted from the tap on the 05/03/2016 at the Barcelona Beer Festival. Black opaque colour with a lot of coffee and chocolate on the aroma. Taste is roasted malts, coffee and hops. Medium sweet and dry aftertaste. Next one please!
