Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels.
“Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.”
Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Butterscotch with a chardonnay finish. A little sweeter than I might wish for, but still reasonable. This is a tripel I definitely will buy again, it may be the best beer from Victory I have tried.

Very winey. The wine barrel takes over the coriander and finer elements of the style and doesn’t leave much behind. Pours golden with ok head and lacing. Golden Monkey far superior. Soft carbonation, with light sweet finish and lots more wine end in the end. Faintly detectable floral yeast. Tap at Churchkey.

Taste too much like wine, though I can't put it down.

Tap at Capones Annual Black Friday event, Norristown PA, 29/11/13. Lightly hazed golden with a moderate off white covering that thins to edgework. Nose is vanilla, white chocolate, grape skins, peach, sweet notes. Taste comprises a mellow white wine woody tang, vanilla caramel fudge, sugars, light yeast, background citric, much more mellow than the base beer. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, vinous fruit finale. Nice stuff, beats the base beer for me, the white wine BA seems to have tempered it well, alcohol well integrated.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a medium sized white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of white wine, bright citrus, spice, bready malts, cider apples, a mild candi fruit-like sweetness. The taste is wood, coconut, vanilla, wine, apples, spice, bready caramel malts. Medium bodied. Quite nice.

Sample at the Hills Market beer tasting on 05/30/2013: The beer is a hazy orange-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of oak, yeast and fruit. Medium to full body with flavors of oak, yeast, peaches and spice. The finish is dry with a lingering vinous oaky aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bouteille 750ml.
