2015 Odd Year Release

This one-time-only release, part of our “Odd Beers for Odd Years” series, takes a downright excessive brew into uncharted, extra-hoppy territory. We did this by dry-hopping it with Azacca hops, essentially turning an American barley wine into a triple IPA. Azacca adds big candied-fruit character plus pineapple and citrus aromatics to the base beer’s onslaught of toffee, tropical fruit and vanilla flavors and robust bitterness. Like its Classic counterpart, this delicious oddity will evolve into an even more glorious beer with age, challenging your ability to wait any longer to drink it.

2015 is an odd year, so we followed our five-year tradition of brewing a variation of the classic Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine recipe. This year we decided to focus on an extra-hoppy version, using the classic recipe as the base. We dry-hopped the beer with a new hop variety, Azacca…a dwarf variety with a name that sort of sounds to us like an all-powerful genie who lives in a bottle (coincidently enough) that was recently developed in Yakima Valley, Washington, and formerly known by the decidedly less genie-like name of "13-AD-483." We’ve used it before, most notably in our collaboration beer Beachwood/Heretic/Stone Unapologetic IPA, but this is the first opportunity we’ve had to really showcase the Azacca hop at this level.

Big bottle from planet wine. Pours a maroon amber with off white head. Yeast, wood citrus predominantly, a bit less boozy than other OG really. A great beer

(Bottle) Dark amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy tan head. Malty, hoppy nose with caramel, treacle-toffee, resin, orange peel, pink grapefruit and lots of hops. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of caramel, treacle-toffee, resin, grapefruit, rye bread, a touch of liquorice and a generous resiny, citric bitterness in the finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness. A bit unbalanced and aggressive, but really tasty with a solid hop presence. Very nice.

Bottle, thank you Tim for this! Pours light brown, not really foamy at all, some beige foam still there. Nose is sweetish, caramelly, some oxidisation and old but still potent hops. Taste has good bitterness, nicely mellowed, light smoke there also, malty and sturdy base. Mellowed together nicely, has aged quite well. Good stuff.

bottle, old rating - Pours deep amber with a small head. It smells of caramel malt, resin, alcohol, and dark fruit. The intense flavor has strong resinous hops backed by a big malty profile. Alcohol is noticeable but pretty overwhelmed by the other flavors. Full bodied. Excellent beer.

Bottle from Systembolaget, 2015 vintage . Pours dark amber with a nice creamy beige head. Grass, burnt caramel, hints of vanilla, dark fudge. Slightly bitter finish with more burnt caramel and vanilla. A little bit rough but that feels like a good thing here. Nice!

Bomber. Stone frui, oranges, peaches. British feel to the hops, tobacco, grassy, reminds me of Fuggles. Nice stuff.

Stone old guardian 2016 variant with pekoe? Hops. Shared by mick. A deep rubbish brown with a beige head and a sharp boozy aroma of fruit and herbal hoppiness. A rich body  with loads of hops and richness. Solid.
