Felix Aged in Apple Whiskey Barrels is a single-foeder golden sour ale aged in apple-flavored whiskey barrels from Leopold Bros. Distillery.

It's part of our Wood Cellar Reserve series, a collection of rare, small-batch wild and sour ales expertly aged by the most award-winning sour brewery in America. From individual barrel expressions, fruit and spice experimentation and fermentation explorations, the Wood Cellar Reserve represents our most ambitious efforts in our two biggest passions – wood and beer.

The beer inside contains the longest, continuous souring culture in America and will develop in the bottle for up to five years. Each batch is bottled-conditioned and 100% naturally carbonated, allowing for the perfect texture and carbonation that our blenders intended for this beer.

Bottle. Really not crazy about sours but I keep trying them thinking I'll find one I like. This one is not too bad. Aroma is fruity. Taste is sour, fruity with lemon and apple.

Foeder no. 61, aged 14 months. Clear copper, some off-white head. Smells sour, woody, indeed some apple. Pretty light body, bit puckering. Taste is heavy sour with some sweetness from the apple, and a bit dry and woody aftertaste. Tasty, not very complex.

Bottle 375ml @ home
Pours slightly hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, funk, oak, brett and apple. Taste is light sweet and medium sour with a long dry, funky, tart and oak finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle shared by Caesar. Clear rusty orange copper color, virtually no head. Aroma and flavor is sourish but it a good way, not tart not acidic at all. Very balanced, semi dry, distant hints of some fruit like maybe green apples and starfruit. I really like this one. Very pleasant.

375ml bottle. Minimaly milky, orangey dark golden to amber colour with average, frothy, quickly diminishing, white head. Earthy. fruity, woody, minimally smoky aroma, notes of old apple. Taste is sour, fruity, notes of apple and lemon zest, some old apple in between, a warming touch of alcohol. Watery texture, astringent palate - doesn't meet my repertoire of favoured flavours.

Sample at Urban Artifact during The Extinction Event: Natural Wine & Spontaneous Beer Fest on 09/28/2019. Clear golden color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Strings of lace. Aroma of oak, apple, yeast and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of apple pie, oak, vanilla and malt. The finish is fruity with a tart apple aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
