Imperial Stout Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels with Madagascar Vanilla Beans
It’s been six years since we released one of the most celebrated Bourbon County Brand Stout variants. Today, we're excited to warmly welcome the return of this iconic member of the Bourbon County Brand Stout family.
Vanilla, as an ingredient, has made an appearance in Bourbon County lineups over the years, but the 2024 Bourbon County Brand Vanilla Rye Stout is a new take on our 2014 Vanilla Rye release. This year’s release showcases rye and the complexity it delivers by starting with a rye imperial stout and aging it in freshly emptied rye whiskey barrels. After aging in barrels for a full year, the stout is then finished with incredibly aromatic madagascar vanilla beans. Bourbon County Vanilla Rye Stout has the beloved attributes of the vanilla variants before it–with a new characteristically rich spice character from aging in the rye whiskey barrels.

T- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, boozy finish.
O- This would benefit from age. Not as good as other BCBS beers. Not my favorite.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet, hot vanilla and pumpernickel aromas. Thick with sweet pit fruit, vanilla and pumpernickel front to back. Lasting, hot vanilla extract finish.

500 mL bottle, picked up at NW Liquor, Monroe. Fun variant that was all kinds of intriguing. Dark and dense pour. Expected this to be sweeter, so this was solid right away. Layered aroma of cocoa, vanilla, whiskey, and maple. Smooth taste with a more bitter finish. Some coffee notes late that pair with a lingering semi intense barrel. A touch hot. It's strong and it shows up. Palate serves a constant reminder of the vanilla addition to this always solid base brew. I'm tempted to rate this an even 4 to keep the pattern alive, but I just can't. Bottle. Pours a near pitch black hue with a small head. A big boozy nose, chocolate and clear vanilla. Rich, huge vanilla, sweet milky chocolate. Not getting much rye, but it is there in the tail. More sweet vanilla. Good, but a bit much.

Clear dark brown to black beer, no head. Aroma: lots of dark chocolate, good roast, bourbon, vanilla, alcohol, a bit oxidized, sugary impression. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of chocolate, good roast, bitter, hoppy touch, alcohol, more roast, lots of caramel, sugary, some chocolate, vanilla notes, lovely! Aftertaste: more alcohol is present, sugary, good roast, dark chocolate, vanilla notes, very nice, love it!
