This is a Baltic Porter brewed with whole licorice root and star anise. 7.8% ABV. It is fermented warm with an ale yeast in flagrant disregard of modern style guidelines, instead working towards a heritage pre-lager treatment of the style. Subtle licorice and anise notes are present in the nose. The body is surprisingly light, with licorice sweetness helping to balance a smoky chocolate malt character. There should be clear notes of roasted barley on the finish.

Keg at Craft beer Co, Clerkenwell, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, fruity aroma. Taste is quite unexpected, really rich, sweet, malty, dark fruit, hint of chocolate, almost port like. Could not detect any licquorice in there but a really interesting brew indeed.

16 ounce can from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown color with a thin brown head that fades quickly. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, faint anise and a fainter bit of citrus. The taste is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, citrus, anise and an herbal note. Thin-medium bodied. Quite nice.

26/04/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Corpo medio, consistenza oleosa. Birra particolarissima e curiosa.

Can pour courtesy of gunhaver. It has a mahogany body with thin mocha head. The aroma is just loads of spicy black licorice and anise as well as maybe a sense of rootbeer. The taste is thick sludgy buckets of spicy black licorice that makes one wonder how they fit all this licorice into this little can. Behind the mountain of black licorice is a sense of black strap molasses.
