This is a Baltic Porter brewed with whole licorice root and star anise. 7.8% ABV. It is fermented warm with an ale yeast in flagrant disregard of modern style guidelines, instead working towards a heritage pre-lager treatment of the style. Subtle licorice and anise notes are present in the nose. The body is surprisingly light, with licorice sweetness helping to balance a smoky chocolate malt character. There should be clear notes of roasted barley on the finish.

From tap at Rogue Ales Public House in SF. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark roasted and toffee dense malty. Smooth malty and roasted. Bitter and dark malty wooden. Smooth, dark malty and hardroasted finish.

(Draught at Pikkulintu) Poured almost black with medium sized and light brown head. Aroma contained coffee with milk, chocolate and roastedness. Palate was quite dry and medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roastedness, ash, chocolate, bitterness and hops. Aftertaste was ashy and bitter.

Oude notities. Deze in 2010 in de BeerTemple van de tap. Kleur is zeer donker, maar niet helemaal zwart, met een kleine, bruinige kraag. Geur van gebrande mout, fruitig, zoetig (mokka). Retronasaal is de mokka duidelijker waarneembaar, zoetig, kruidig, iets rood fruit. Smaak is zoetig/mokka, iets kruidig en een licht fruitzuurtje. Medium body.

On tap at Beer Temple. Pitch black, just the slightest reddish hue, creamy beige head. Aroma was just superb, liquorice, raisins and rhum (boerenjongens), some star anise, roasted malts. Lovely. Flavour didn’t hold up to the aroma, but still very nice, with lots of drop (english liquorice), star anise, a bit of brandy, sweet roasted malts, ending in a nice dry but sweet coffee finish. Medium bodied. Becomes a bit cloying towards the end, but remains interesting and drinkable.

A deep dark porter with a thin creamy moka head. A plesant treacle and chocolate, notes of vanilla and alcohol warmth. In mouth, a silky sweet chocolate, butterscotch, treacle, oily and rich bodied. Du bonbon! On tap at Russian River Beer and BBQ Revival, August 15 2009.

Can shared at RBSG Grand Tasting. Nose of chocolate, and some light raosted coffee. Black with a medium beige head. Flavor is slightly sweet chocolate, a licorice note, and background coffee.

Draft. Black beer with a tan head. Choclate and light roasted coffee aroma. Big chocolate flavor with licroice and a bit of backing roastiness. Medium-plus bodied. Chocolate lingers with roast and a bit of licorice.

Draft. Dark blackish color with a winey/beige head. Aromas of dark malt and red wine. Fulll bodied with mild carbonation. Flavors of really dark toast, port wine and light spice. Develops sturdy and persistent chocolate in the finish. Anise seems present. Not dry, but why should it be?
