Brekle’s Brown has a coppery brown color and unusual depth of flavor with hints of citrus which makes for richness and complexity without heaviness. The classic, all-malt, single-hop American brown ale.

Trivia: in 1871 brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived in San Francisco from Germany. He purchased an old beer-and-billiards saloon near Russian Hill and transformed it into the little craft brewery that — twenty-five years later — would be renamed Anchor.

Pours a dark brown colour with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, malts, malts, malts... You got that right, this is a malty brew, with a slight presence of citra hop in the aroma. Noticed caramel, toffee and hops. Very enjoyable Brown Ale.

Notes from October 2011 On tap @ Hop Devil Grill. Pint glasses are not yet extinct. Mud brown & amber color. Decent clarity. Transparent inch of off-white head. Doughy, barely nutty aroma. Ashy. Served too cold. Becomes more crusty as it warms. Flavor is acrid, nearly burnt malt. Dry toast. Earthy, root flavors. Bit of liquorice & faint coffee. Not very caramelized at all. Moderately bitter. Stiff carbonation that probably isn't what Anchor intended. Medium light body; textured feel. Alcohol isn't very noticeable for 6%. Decent bitter American brown, but there wasn't much nuttiness/depth in the roast.

Bottle from Londis, Knighton, Leicester. Mid- to dark brown, translucent with a tight khaki head. Aroma is gentle but still pretty stunning: oak, chocolate, black raspberry, marshmallow. There's a surprising amount of hoppy bitterness in the initial sip, and what sweetness there is fades in the finish. Body's really watery. Heavily carbonated. All in all it is a delicious brown.

Bottled. Cloudy chestnut brown. Small beige head. Rich malts form the nose: caramel, toast, honey. Citrusy hops are well in front. Light to medium body. Medium sweet an decently bitter taste. Rich malts. Citra hops. I liked it definitely.

Wenig Carbo, dunkelbraun, in der Nase schöne Nalznoten mit einer gewissen Fruchtigkeit. Im Trunk malzig süffig, leichte Schokonoten mittig, hinten bitter. Schöne Komposition!
