Zaison takes its inspiration from the famous Saison style of beer madein the southern region of Belgium. Traditionally this beer is made in the coolness of the winter months to be enjoyed in the Spring and Summer. Our special yeast strain gives this beer a little funkiness and is accented with tellicherry black peppercorns and orange peel. At 9% abv this is probably one of the strongest summer beers you will encounter. The alcohol contributes to the flavor so who are we to try to reduce it? This is the strength the beer wanted to be, so we left it that way.

16 oz can from a trade with BrewJay. The pour is a clear golden with a noisy bubbly four inch slightly off white head. Falls quickly and thinly. The aroma is hay, herbal, sweet grass and warming alcohol. The taste is sharply sweet upfront, clove herbal close behind, medicinal and finishes with a weird mix of the sweet, the grass and booze. The clove of the yeast carries the long finish. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, foamy active carbonation and the yeast booze finish. These amped up Saisons are not really my thing; this beer was no exception. Regardless, thanks for this one Jay!

Salty, vinous, acidic, alcohol, spicy taste. Medium mouthfeel, to the full side, medium low bitterness. Spicy, orange, alcohol, sweet aftertaste. Sweet, spicy, alcohol, acidic scent.

Draft in snifter. I enjoyed the tartness and the high ABV variation of the style; medium spice and fruit. A bit weak on the finish.

Very hazy orange beer, small off white head. Mild fine carbonation in the smooth and semi dry palate. A little malt cream. Fairly intense orange and a nice kick from the pepper. Touch of lemon. Semi dry finish. Hides the abv well. Black pepper heat linger.

16 ounce can courtesy of northernbrews. Thanks! Pours a hazy orange-yellow color with a large frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of bready malts and big spice notes, including pepper and the citrus peel, as well as big citrus and stone fruit notes. The taste is bready malts, stone fruits, citrus, lemongrass and faint pepper. Medium-full bodied, slight heat. Nice beer. EDIT:: I’m glad I got this rating in before Sandy knocks out my power! Phew!

Courtesy of JPDurden24. I dig the novelty of a 9% saison in a 16oz can, that is cool. The can pours up with a clear deep gold body that supports a thin off white head of foam. The aroma delivers up some earthy notes, spicy saison yeast, sweet apple like esters and a bit of lemon nuanced vinegar. The taste turned out to be similar and pulls together saison yeast spices, sweet apple and somewhat pear like fruity esters and then a mild vinegar note that holds this whole thing together.

16 oz can. Pours a hazy golden with a white head. Yeasty clove aroma, maybe leaning a bit herbal. Yeasty cloves in the flavor too, but more complex, red apple hinting at red grape, slightly tart with a bretty hint and biscuit. Very slight sweetness, finishing dry. Quite enjoyable.

This beer pours a hazy amber-gold color with a medium thin white head that evaporates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of ripe fruit and spices. Medium body with flavors of yeast, off funky fruit and spices. The finish is fruity with a peppery aftertaste. Interesting concept but seems disjointed in the execution.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Clear straw body, medium-thick tight off-white head. Grainy nose, grassy with hints of citrus, unfermented sugars, and alcohol. Sweet body with citrus peel (sugary orange), grassy and bready with fruity esters and alcohol warmth. A little too sweet to drink in quantity.

On tap. Poured a bright gold with a thick white head. Aroma was full of sweet yeast notes as well as some orange peel and an undertone of pepper. Flavor was a nice combination of sweet yeast and an unexpected pepper flavor that turned out quite nicely. There was also an undertone of citrus.
