Carling Black Label developed as a brand in 1927 from the Canadian brewery Carling O’Keefe's existing Black & White Lager. It was introduced into the UK in 1952. The brand became hugely successful in the UK via a very popular ad campaign with the slogan "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label". The name changed from Carling Black Label to Carling, with the subtitle Original Lager, in 1997.

Tap. Pours crystal clear golden, large white creamy head, nice lacing. Aroma is grain and grass, flavor about the same, light sweet, light bitter. Light body. No real off tastes.

Can. 3 months out of date, that I found. Classy, I know. And I have to say, I’ve had worse. But not by much. Actually, I found 2. And drank them both, which probably says more about me than the beer.

Probably the first beer I ever tried. Clear yellow in appearance, small white head. Aroma is a little grainy but fairly weak. Taste, roughly what you’d expect from this kind of thing, nothing interesting to write about, a bit of malt/corn flavour. Not bad overall, just average though. (old rating, around 2007)

Sample from a can liberated from a train in Waterloo by Leighton. Thanks? Crystal clear yellow with a lasting pure white head. Aroma is odd mix of metalic, paper, veg and cider apple notes. Later a little soapy note developes on the nose. Flavour is composed of watery grains, carbonic acid, veg and metal. Palate is very light papery, carbonic acid bite. Shitty cheap lager, doesn’t get much shittyer or cheaper than this.

Golden color with an ok white head. Grainy and malty aroma. Medium (light) body with a soft to average carbonation. Tad sweet and a moderate bitterness. Grainy and malty flavor. Nothing to recommend.

Bottle. Aroma sweetish, diacetyl and cooked corn. Clear colour golden. Sugary candyish taste with more of all that is in aroma. Seriously flawed beer that at least somehow remains a bit drinkable.

Pours clear golden color, topped with a medium foamy white head that soon settles down. Malty aroma, some notes of grains and a bit grassy. Sweet, a bit watery, almost no bitterness to speak of. Dry finish with a bit metallic aftertaste. Not unpleasant, just not that good.
