Rich deep copper and almost burgundy coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of english hops, malt, alcohol, metal, earth and bitterness - decent, perhaps, but nothing striking aside from making me think it’s an EPA. Medium to Light-bodied; Strong metallic and malty flavours at first with some bitterness from hops, grapefruit and a bit of funky and stale malt character. Aftertaste shows caramelised sugars, some light toffee, funky stale malt and a bit of metallic hops - nothing too pleasant. Overall, I’m afraid this is all reputation ratings here - this one is not a ’typical’ IPA, especially one from California - this is an English Pale Ale and not even a good one at that - drinkable, but not exciting, which is too bad, because I too, have a special place in my heart for Anchor and especially for the bottles [shape] that are pumped from San Francisco, but this one is just purely decent, if that, and surely, definitely not worth trying to find nor spending the money on, sadly. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Falls Church (Tyson’s Corner), Virginia on 19-September-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 05-December-2014.

355ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, copper-ish amber colour with late awakening, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Citrusy, slightly floral and minimally herbal hoppy aroma, caramel malty basis. Taste is moderately sweet caramel malty, fruity, citrusy hoppy overtones, some orange and mandarine, hints of peach; minimally unpleasant, chalky bitter and yeasty finish. Obviously experienced craft behind.

16.11.2014, 0,35l bottle @ home:
Big creamy longlasting head, quite dark red-amber color. Aroma is slightly concentrated resiny, pine needles, moss, lots of hops, leafs, bark, grass, alkohol, sap, hints of caramel malts. Taste is harsh resiny, pine needles, bark, soap, sap, fresh wood, moss, harsh hops, old leafs, alvohol, cardboard, soil. Medium to longlasting bitterness, harsh mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea.

Bottle from QClub at home. Slightly translucent dark copper-amber pour with thin foamy head. Aroma is apple juice, pine, hops, tiny bit of cinnamon and spice. Taste is crisp and bitter, mostly piney hops. Fairly carbonated. Lasting bitter dry finish. Nothing out of the ordinary but very solid IPA. Would definitely get again.

Classic West Coast IPA from Anchor, found in a local supermarket, to my utmost delight. Pours a beautiful coppery amber colour, clear with fine sparkles, under an off-white, sticky, medium thick and stable head. As expected, the aroma reveals strong citrussy hoppiness, with impressions of grapefruit peel, candied orange, mandarin liqueur, black pepper, butterscotch, fresh melon, bitter honey, red apple, pipe tobacco, cognac, cake, lemon zest. Vivid, crisp citrus peel and exotic fruits kick off in the mouth, with a refreshing sourish touch and sharp, minerally carbonation, over a smooth and somewhat oily middle phase built from caramelly and nutty malts, spicy hoppiness sets in early and leads to a very long, dry, peppery, citrussy, herbal and tonic water-like bitter finish. Flawless, exemplary for its style, though less bold and less agressive than some other IPAs (and certainly double IPAs); yet this beer has enough personality to withstand any comparison. Elegance and balance to perfection. Loved it.

12 oz bottle. Pours orange amber with sparse fine particles and a caramel head. Citrus and herbal grassy sweet aroma. Sweet tropical and citrus fruit hop flavors with a touch of grassiness adding a bit to it. Seems a bit aged, but it’s rather nice.

Bottle. A clear, dark golden beer with a small, dense, light beige head. The aroma has lightly cheesy hops, with pine cones, resins, lemon notes and a caramel maltyness. Toffee, a faint note of licorice, a fine bitterness, some pine cones and resin and a flowery touch in the flavor. Full body, with a pleasant carbonation, although a tad hard. Lasting bitter and malty finish. Sure a fine beer, but I’d like it to be more hop forward. 141025
