Ale brewed with fig juice. A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a "soft drink" they insisted was just fig juice...

Bottle from Hoptimism. Dank and vinous aroma. Toffee pruney sweetness then develops. Underlying sweetness. Hazy honey gold. Fluffy white head. Medium sour, citrus and vinous. Spicey edge. Vague underlying sweetness that gains traction as the beer warms up, moreso into the finish. Light bodied. Slick if thin. Fizzy carbonation (it's a gusher). Long dry astringent finish. Decent stuff although I would have liked some chewy prunes. Off for a dump.

A dark orange to light amber pour, transparent, slightly hazy on second pour. Medium sized (not that big per style) dense white head, good retention and hints of lacing. Pretty strong aroma has a dominant fruity base of green apple and fig, a touch of underlying sugary sweetness, some spicy/prickly hints, plus some rustic/earthy and grassy notes that showcase a bit of saison-like character. Overall vivid and clean. Taste is still vivid and clean though not as complex as the smell suggested. Sweet in both taste and aftertaste with a bit of residual sugary sweetness and the slightest hint of sourness, fruity notes of green apple and fig get really dominant, while the saison/rustic character gets really subdued. Taste is overall pleasant but quite onedimensional. Light to medium bodied with an average to high sort of soft carbonation and a bit of juice-like feel. The beer was overall pleasant, but quite monotonous after while; probably not something i would look for again.

On tap at Haandgemeng. A hazy orange-golden beer with a white head leaving some lacing. The aroma has a faint funk touch and notes of lemon, with generic fruityness doing most of the work. Bread, some orange and grapefruit, hints of coriander and yeast chiming in. It's quite dry on the palate, nicely carbonated and full-bodied, with mostly fruity flavors. Some barnyard-ish, lemony funk too. Hints of horse blanket, and a long fruity finish. The fig juice is quite subdued, but it's a fine brew indeed. 171027

Corked bottle @ UDRM, Oirschot. Figs and a hint of white pepper in the aroma. Dried fruit, citrus and white pepper in the flavor. Sticky mouthfeel. Decent.

On tap @ Taplokaal Gist, Utrecht. Hazy orange with a white head. Malty fruity aroma with some farmhouse funk. Taste is medium bitter with a dry finish. Didn't get much of the figs to be honest but it still is a quaint atypical beer in the best Belgian tradition.

On tap at Dr. Beer, Antwerpen. Hazy golden to amber, oily. Small head. Yeasty aroma, slightly funky, spicy, peppery, vegetal. Light caramel malts. Dried fruits, I wouldn't say figs, maybe raisins. Oily texture, smooth, banana bread, spice, lots of cloves in the finish. Appetizing. Moderate finish, light to a medium body. Very light bitterness. Calm and gentle.

Bottle. Color: Slightly reddish hazy golden, huge frothy off-white head. Aroma: Malt, fruity, yeast. Taste: Saison-ish yeasty, moderate sweet and moderate sour. Fruity notes of figs and some apple, green apple skin and herbal hints. Moderate bitterness at finish. Long lasting finish. Dry-ish mouthfeel. Under medium to medium body, just below average carbonation. Nice pretty complex traditional Belgian Ale.
