Coinciding with the release of his bottled range in the UK market, Doug joined the Thornbridge team to recreate a version of his Red Ale, which has recently medalled at the World Beer Cup and North American Beer Awards. The 5.9% beer is crammed with speciality malts and with a twist on the popular American Red Style, it has been hopped instead with a massive amount of oil-rich English hops including Admiral, Bramling Cross, Phoenix, Pilgrim and First Gold.

“We wanted to take a great US style of beer and put a bit of a British twist on it,” says Brewery Manager, Kelly Ryan. “We don’t want people to dismiss the fantastic breadth of flavour and aroma that UK hops can give to a beer... not every beer should be about US or NZ hops. It was also amazing to work with such a stalwart of the US microbrewing industry”.

Colorado Red, as the beer has been named in tribute to Doug’s brewery, will be released on Monday August 2nd at a Meet the Brewer event in the Cask and Kitchen in Pimlico, London. The beer is described as having hints of subtle toffee malt, complimented by a heady mix of dried fruit, candied peel, hop resin, rosewater and a fantastic blend of herbal UK hop notes. The bitterness is well rounded and the beer finishes with hints of citrus and roasty malt characteristics.
Thornbridge’s very own UK Brewer of the Year!

Handpump at Craft Beer Co. Clapham, in London. Amber cloudy pour, creamy cappuccino head. Nose: incense a bit, toffee far away. Mouth: sweet (but not too sweet) caramel, roasted malts, silky body and mild bitter finish. Liked it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Holiday, top-50 fun hunt. #-4. From @Bitter Virtue, 500 ml. Pours bright red/amber with a off white head. Aroma of pine, straw, hay, wheat, yeast, malt, medium hoppiness. Taste is very soft, fresh, caramel, hop, hopbitterness modest, typical English hops, the bitterness flattens quite quickly after the sip, underneath easy going and very accessible, some tea, mild and some roasted malts, medium body

Bottle at home picked up from beer gonzo, drunk in the garden on a very warm summer’s evening. Pours a rich ruby red amber colour with a loose, sticky magnolia head. Aroma is delicate hedgerow berries, tangy red currants, hints of dried orange peel, fruits and nuts. Flavour is composed of semi sweet nutty malts, dried orange rind, red berries, little toasted bread. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, moderate carbonation, and a decent crisp finish. Very well balanced and drinkable.

Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants, consumed at home. Brownish-red, light and translucent. A small film of creamy head sits on top. Delicious scent. Spruce, soft citrus, sweet herbs and turpentine. Exceedingly bitter taste, there’s a resiny sweetness which briefly surfaces but it’s drowned out by the bitter finish. Hop oil dominates the aftertaste. Body in surprisingly weak. Very good but lacking the final punch I was halfway expecting.
